Can a Colt Commander complete top end work on a goverment frame? What do you mean by the dust cover? I want to use a complete Commander top end on a Goverment frame. I believe I need to change the extractor?

The dust cover on your frame will be conspicuously too long, and you'll want a commander ejector. To the best of my feeble recollection, that's all.

I agree, dustcover will be too long. I just went through this exercise, it's an easy fix.

Hey guys, I'm just curious. What would be the purpose to change frames except to switch from a LW frame to a steel frame. Stay safe. Dave

In Massachusetts the only used guns available are those that were registered before 1998 in Ma. or Curio and relics. New Colts can no longer be bought in Ma. Therefore an used Commander is worth a premium as much or more than a new one somewhere else. Therefore I'm building one using an used Commander top on a Goverment frame. In trying times we must learn to be resourseful. Most of the country is going in one direction and Ma. is going in the other. Judical and Attorney General legislation without the population voting. I did not realize that about Colt's. You are not going to like to hear this. Last Wed. I swapped for a new SS Colt Commander and was able to take it home the same day. We have no waiting peroid in MN. But we are having trouble with our shall issue CC Permit that was passed in may 2003. We are waiting for a ruling any day now. Take Care and stay safe. Dave

What do you mean by the dust cover? Is that the bottom pert of the frame?

George,
The dust cover is the portion of the frame forward of the trigger guard (toward the muzzle end). It should line up with the slide forward curving upward profile.

You will find on a government frame that the dust cover extends forward of the slide profile, but not completely to the front of the slide. It is an aesthetics issue, not functional. The dust cover can be cut back to the commander length.

Yes, you can use a Commander slide on a Gov. frame.

You should use an extended ejector either Commander style or something of the like.

If you're a buff user, use one from CP they are one of the thinnest on the market.
