I recently inherited a large firearms collection and I'm going through each piece one by one. I have a M1911 with serial #48xxx. I have fired a full clip of rounds through it and it shoots very nice and it is in very good condition (some light scratches but no pitting and original finish). From the digging/researching I have done I believe it was made in 1913. It appears however, that it has been worked on over the years. The slide has a last patent date of 1913 so I believe that is has been changed somewhere along the line? The front site is of an early style (1911 - 1919). In addition the hammer has flat sides and I believe this is from a colt M1911 model 5?. I have no intention of selling it (at least anytime soon) but I'm wondering if I should attempt to restore it to original configuration. Any thoughts on this and it's configuration? -John
ps. I tried unsuccessfully to post photos, any help in doing this would be appreciated.

The slide is from 1918, but can't tell much else without some closeups shot in better (more) light.

Hard to tell from those photos..... but you are correct, the slide is much later than the frame.... 1918-19. The hammer and thumb safety are later production as well. Correct magazine would have a lanyard loop, the balance looks to be correct.

You're best to leave the pistol as is. Based on your photos, the pistol has been refinished with a phosphate (parkerized) finish. The finish does look to be a military arsenal finish, but an in-hand inspection would be necessary to verify.
The wear patterns appear to pretty much match from the slide to the frame. Anything you do to the pistol now to change it will only decrease it's value. I'd keep it and enjoy shooting it now and then. I wouldn't turn it into a regular shooter or a carry gun...just a plinker now and then.
Thanks for the photos. Nice piece.

Hello,
I keep hearing people on here saying things about the slide and frame matching and original parts, but I am very new to my A1 ('43 Remington Rand)and I was wondering if someone could tell me where to look for numbers on the gun, or direct me to a thread on this site that has already covered the subject. I would also like to get the names of some of the books that keep getting recomended (Clawson I believe).
Thank you for any help.

Thanks for the feedback. I think I will leave the slide alone but I'd really like to change the hammer to an earlier version. Is their a source for parts on the early M1911's? thanks again, -John
