View Full Version : Any reason to stay away from a S80 Combat Commader?

Does anyone have any experience/opinions about a Series 80, Mk IV, Stainless Steel, Combat Commander w/the flat top slide?
It's lightly used in excellent condition for $650. Not sure of the serial# prefix, it's still at the shop. It has an extended beavertail like the xse, but a standard safety lever. It has the flat top slide w/dovetailed sights- Trijicon N/S, which I don't think came with the gun. Everything else is original as far as I can tell.
It has good slide to frame fit, with only a little play.
I guess I was just wondering if this one falls under some of the "problem" (the results of bad QC) Series 80 pistols that I have heard about.
I love Colts, I just have never owned a Series 80. I want the gun for duty carry. Any input would be appreciated.

If it's in good shape and shoots reliably it's probably not a bad deal. There were very few Series 80 pistols that had any kind of QC problems. I've ran into some myself, but I'd say they were the exception rather than the rule.

I've had a few Series 80 Commanders come across the bench and all have functioned well.........not sure where the bad rap is coming from.

no..great pistol..mine is in blue, and it is a great shooter.I think 650. is the going price...why dont you negotiate it down some?...BTW ...one of my local rip-off gunstores has one like you describe...a SS enhanced MKIV commander for 699. and it looks like someone drug it behind their pickup for a long road trip! If you could get it for 600..I would think you done good.

Sure there is a good reason, if you do not get it, I will.
OK, I have to be honest, I can't get it, because of the well known reasons, but if I could, I would.
Jokes apart, I know of nothing bad about the S80 Commanders.

Thanks for your input!
I'm not really sure where the bad rap is coming from either. I just wanted to be sure.
It is in great shape, and even though I can't shoot it before I buy it, I'm sure it will function just fine.
I can't talk the price down, it's a consignment. Oh, well. Colts are highly sought after here in Tucson!

Just yesterday bought one (with the proverbial "idiot mark") and very little other marks, scratches or dings. This will be my second 80 flattop, third stainless and 4th Commander(also have XSE stainless just sitting in the safe as 'back-up). Not bragging at all, John
First two run like a dream-no stumbles or hiccups at all. Get to be Range Officer all day tomorrow so should get some time to run the new one :D

Ran about 75 rounds thru the new Commander this afternoon after all the shooters went home. Not a hiccup with 225 tc lead, 230 fmj and 230 Rem jhp.
Rang the 50 yd steel plate 6 of 8 rounds. :)
I'm real happy with it on the first run thru :D :D
If you don't get the one you'relooking at, you'll be sorry

I have an enhanced-version in stainless with a Brown grip safety. It is my favorite carry piece. The shorter barrel is a little more comfortable for me than a Government model, and I prefer the full-size grip to the shorter grip of my Wilson CQB Compact (Officer's size grip).
I think that is a very reasonable price if the pistol is in good condition.

I sincerely believe the Combat Commander is the ideal carry/duty gun for me!
I went ahead and bought the piece in question. I will post pics of it tomorrow.
Thanks for all your input guys, it helped me make a good, educated decision.

Well, no pics yet, but for anyone who cares, here's the verdict:
I shot 200 rounds through it, and it performed flawlessly. It was smooth, with a mild recoil (factory ammo), and very accurate! It was a joy to shoot.
We took it out on the range with a S&W 1911 SS. Shooting them one after the other, I personally could not tell the difference in recoil or accuracy between the Commander and the Gov't size guns. Some of you may have already tried this, but it was my first time comparing the two at the same time.
It was definitely a wise choice to grab it!
Thanks again for your help on this one.
