Did colt ever make the original 70 series in stainless? I've thought about getting one but I don't recall seeing an original in that configuration.

Ahhh...............yes, there might be a 'few' S&W N frames 'n stuff in there somewhere. I try to rotate them a bit so each gets a few trips to the range each year.

No. Colt introduced SS around 1984 by which time the Series-80 firing system had been deployed. This is why I want the new Series 70 SS. A gun that was never built. O.K. The new ones have better sights, nylon MSH, blah, blah, blah. Still a nice gun.

I had one and sold it to a nephew, so I don't have it in my hands now. Not 100% sure that the MSH was Nylon. On the other hand that is like a $40 part. Save whatever came with the gun.

So what was the color of the medalllions on the first stainless steel Series 80 Government Model? I can't tell by the picture you posted. In fact I can't tell that it is stainless steel. Maybe my eyes are getting bad?

Mine came with a nylon MSH.

While I can't speak with any authority on the guns being shipped from Colt at the present time, both of mine (purchased in May and June of 2006) have steel mainspring housings.

My 1984 and 1987 had silver.

Probably not your eyes. ;)
That is an add that Colt released when they introduced the stainless model, it didn't scan very well.
