I have a Surefire 6Z, for some years now, and I've been very pleased with it. Some years ago, I have read that there is an alternative lamp assembly that you can use in these lights, which is twice as bright as the original lamp. Yesterday, I was passing from the local rep, so I thought I would step in and ask if they have that new lamp.

Well, they did. The lamp assembly is P-61, normally the 6Z, 6P etc, used the P-60, which is rated at 65 lumens for an hour of usage. The new assembly is rated at 120 lumens, but for 20 minutes of usage.

I installed the new lamp on the light, and its performance is nothing short of phenomenal. I could see the details of a building's face three blocks away from my house.

I just thought I should report it here, a nice upgrade for those who have those older lights.

when i first got my surefires i also got the higher intensity lamp for all three i own, one for wife, one for the kid and one my myself. depending upon what we are doing and how long we want the batteries to go, we switch out the lamps. just as you stated, it is amazing how much light the higher intensity lamps will put out.

LoL, yes it is. I pointed to my elder son yesterday, and for the next hour he was complaining to me, that he couldn't see well!

Irresponsible, but since I can't point my 1911 to him (Cooper's rule No2), the flashlight was a good alternative.

one quick story.....this summer we were in Florida on the beach late at night hunting down crabs (my youngest is 12 and got a great kick out of it) and the surefire's gave us a visual of the whole area for a long ways compared to regular lights which a number of people were using. this gave me a sense of security as no one was coming near us without our knowing it and the light was strong enough to effectively blind an unwanted visitor giving us time to move away. we had two with regular lamp assemblies and one with the upgraded one and that one was a real zinger on the overcast nights with it's very impressive output.

our self defense instructors recently indicated they relied more often on their lights than their guns and a good powerful light was with them at all times. these are your average folks on the street now, and not LEO's, although one was retired FBI. he still keeps a tac light handy.

I also use the P61 in my 2 6P's and my C2. AND THEY ROCK, but the eat batteries. However, I TRIED to use a P91(200 lumens) in my 9Z and it melted the lense slightly...... I gave bulb to friend to put in his 9P and he accidently set it off in a nylon holster and it melted the holster a little..... I love Surefires..... (I have 4) but gotta watch the 9volt versions...

Yup, I upgraded my Z2 to a P61 bulb and added a GGG TID. Nice package.

Hahmmm, what is GGG TID please?

John, my apologies. The GGG TID is a 'Tactical Impact Device', it is a defensive tool attached to the flashlight bezel. GGG is a company in Tuscon, Arizona specializing in hard use accessories for rifles. Their website is http://www.gggaz.com.

I haven't gotten the upgraded light for my Z2 yet, but I figured when I can light up my dad from about 150' away with it, and he thinks that a car is coming up behind him it's good enough. As far as the blinding power, try it on someone who is already acustomed to the dark and see how happy they are when you shine it in their eyes. I've made many a role player mad at me when I lit em up as a cadet for the local PD. One thing that I found that's helps w/ battery life, is if you keep it in the lock out/off position until you need to use it.

Great looking light, could that be a weapon also?

Yes the lights can be used as weapons in 3 ways, one is as a blinding light, 2 is as a presure weapon like a kubaton(sp?) and 3 is as a presure weapon with the saw tooth attachment on it.
