I'm just taking a shot in the dark that this is the right place to ask this question. Have any of you ever taken any of the mail-order gunsmith courses. I'm not looking to go into the business, just to be a better, smarter gun owner in regards to the mechanics of my weapons. If you have taken any of these courses, which ones. Thanks Dean

I have not attended any mail order classes. I learned by hanging around smiths of good repute. I learned a lot on my own. and I bought the best reading material I could find and put theories to practice.

Hard knocks, scraped knuckles, burned fingers, ruined parts, make-shift equipment, etc... all were used as learning tools.

I am not an expert by any means, but I try.

There is one in CA that offers a mail order degree "I don't remember the name" and don't think the degree would be worth anything but they offer some video courses on Design function and repair that are taught by Bob Dunlap . He used to be the head instructor in the gunsmithing program a Lassen Comm Coll in Ca .
I graduated from the Lassen program many moons ago and was working for Bob while they were doing the filming of the videos . They also have some videos on how to do custom work with some other gunsmiths . But if you want to learn how diff guns work and why they don't Bob is the man . Also there are summer NRA courses at some colleges with gunsmithing programs if a more hands on approach would interest you

Thanks for the comeback guys. I've found that my local community college offers a GS course every couple of years, and I've just hit it when it isn't being offered, so I'll wait and get the hands on, but I may try one of the mail order ones just to get my feet wet. I'm sure that you get what you pay for, so I'm not expecting any miracles. Dean

Dave Sample runs a good "online" course, limited to the 1911, with assistance from Bill Zollo and a couple other folks. I took it and found it worthwhile.

NRA has short term gunsmithing schools, 1-3 weeks or so, during the summer. There is also scholarships available for these. Call 703.267.1412 to request an information packet on them. They're starting soon. You can take short term courses like, accurizing the 1911, scrimshaw, engraving, single action, etc.... There are four of them, Lassen in Susanville, CA is one of them. There is one in NC, CO and I believe OK.

RMW if you're feferring to the Survival Store that used to be near the Stratisphere, it is gone, and I just loked in the phone book, and there is no listing for the survival store. I thought that they had moved out on either W. Flamingo or W. Tropicana, but I don't see anything in the phone book. Are you an ex-Las Vegan? Dean

No but a friends cousen was he manager there , and when I worked for PISCO in ca we would do some of the more difficult gunsmithing jobs they had . The guy that owned it was a real character , a couple of his x-wives were porno stars
