I am looking at a couple of Hi-Powers. One is the full-size and one is the "Detective" model (shorter slide and barrel, akin to the 1911 Commander-size pistols). I can only afford to buy one at this time. Faced with the decision, which would be the better pistol as a first Hi-Power acquisition?

It will not be used as a carry pistol or primary home defense pistol. Just looking to expand the collection.

Hawkmoon,

If it was my first HP, it would have to be a full-size FN or Browning. The only "commander" size HP's I know of are made by FM (I believe out of Argentina) and I believe C&S made a custom one a few years back and could still be making them. At the range I work at we have sold a few FM's but IMHO I don't think they stack up against the FN and Browning in terms of quality, fit and finish.

Go with the full size. I've never been that interested in commander-sized guns, so I never looked into the Detective too much, but I seem to remember reading that they go through springs fairly quickly, and it's hard to find springs for them. I could be wrong. Take it for what it's worth.

I would stick with the regular full size Browning P-35 for even that is short in bbl & slide length to a Colt 45 Govt or other such models.

Agreed. Go with the "Real Deal" first. Later, if you want variety, you can get the "niche" guns. Also, you will find that the full-size HP is amazingly compact.

Hello. I would go with the standard size Hi Power.

Best.
