Colt said "send it back" last shot fired, mag released, new full mag tapped in,slide releases forward without touching the release. This is NIB 70 one month old.It is my first 70 series so I was not sure if this proper function for the 70 or a malfunction.Made for fast reload but didn't seem to be proper function. My 80 series has never done this. It did it with Colt mags & Wilsons equally. Is this the slide release? or something else? Colt said no problem, send her back.Wonder what all you think.

I've seen Glocks load themselves, but never a 1911. Send it back.

My H&K USPc in .45 does this all day long. I don't see it as a problem.

It may not be a problem for some but that is not how the gun should operate. All it takes is someone forgetting and leave their finger on the trigger, that is just asking for trouble. If Colt said send it back, send it back.

If you could I would try a different slide release as you have tried different mags. Maybe you don't have to send the whole gun back.

If Colt said send it back, send it back.
Good advice that is what I would do if it were mine...... ;)

It's definitely not normal. When the slide locks back after firing the last round in the magazine, check how high in the slide release notch the slide release has gone, most probably it's not all the way up. If my thought is correct, you need to find why it doesn't go all the way up and this can be due to a few reasons:
- weak magazine spring
- slide stop not properly fitted to the frame
- frame opening too small to allow the slide stop the full travel.
If you can lock the slide back manually and the slide stop goes all the way up, then your magazine spring is weak.

It's a fairly common occurence on H&Ks. Bad things can always happen when you forget and leave your finger on the trigger when you are not supposed to.

+1, This is not how the pistol should operate, send it back. A finger left on the trigger could run from an annoying surprise to a deadly accident. They'll fix it for free.

The magazines are new colt & new wilson,so I don't think the springs are weak,I will send back to Colt,I am sure they can pin-point trouble{I hope}
Now if I can get UPS to let me ship gun back to Colt.UPS corp.office said to take to main depot for overnight delivery to Colt,I even got customer rep.to check with super to make sure before I drove to depot, man at desk said I needed FFL from Colt before I could ship.Called corp.office back, super said man at shiping desk was mistaken and they would contact them to explain that I was shiping to the MFG. not a individual and overnight was all I needed. They called within the hour and said they had it taken care, bring it back and they were sorry. 5 min later, same lady calling me back to tell me she found the man I had talked to at the desk and I did need FFL from Colt.I guess man at desk has more knowledge than the super at corp.office.
I'll call Colt tomorrow to get faxed FFL to give to man at desk,go figure!
Thanks again for your help

UPS doesn't need an FFL but they probably aren't smart enough to realize it. They gave me such a hard time the last few guns I shipped that I use FedX. I just call and arrange for pickup the next day.

Just another reason why FedEx is eatin' UPS' lunch...

You do not need an FFL to send a firearm in for repair. I've had some sight problems with some Colt's and have sent them back no problem. Had trouble with some old revolvers and sent them in for repair also. The only trouble is that the people at UPS are clueless. I went a few times to a UPS shipping center in the city and the last time they wouldn't do it. I went outside of the city limits (across the street in the suburbs) and they shipped it off for me, no problems. They don't get enough packages that are firearms so they always seem confused on what to do with them.

Oh oh, I just realized that the place outside of the city was a Fed Ex location! At any rate, my package didn't seem to cause them any problems, it seemed like they knew what to do and weren't "concerned" about the contents and what do we do with "THAT"? Colt sends them back via FedEx.

Follow up on shipping back to Colt.Got nowhere with UPS,called FED EX,they said do not need FFL from MFG. to send back for repair, which most of us know that have been involved with shipping firearm back to mfg. Took it to store,no problems at all.I suggest Fed Ex as the prefered shipper.
Thanks again
