What to get?

It's been awhile and I'm considering adding another COLT to my collection. I figure about 1 pony a year is a good pace for me. Having bought at the high end before, I am trying to decide between an all black basic 1991 and the blued XSE with wood grips. The all black 1991 has a lot of appeal but the XSE is also a good looking piece for the money.

Before I decide, does anyone know if the all black 1991 will continue to be on the market? Does anyone have any horror stories about either model?

The black 1991s were the M1991A1 pistols. They are NOT available. The current 1991 series is blued. Not quite as highly polished before blueing as the Series 70 reproductions, but a very nice finish. Rio Vista Slim just posted pics of his two 1991s (one blue, one stainless) within the last day or three. I'm sure a search on his user name will bring it up.

Like Hawkmoon said the ORM 1991A1 is OOP. If it was up to me I would purchase the XSE. Used Nib examples of the ORM are still available for reasonable prices and both would make excellent choices.

Both are great pistols. I would lean to the XSE also.

It was bound to happen. I agree with you,Justin(the guy with the "questionable" avatar pic). At least at this point in time. I'm as fickle as anybody when Pony choosing. The XSEs look good.

Oh yeah,I got a M1991A1 horror story;I've never even held one in my hand;but I know I want one. Is that horrible enough!?

The baad part is I don't have the opportunity to try/touch before I buy. sheesh Like that's gonna matter...as if.

I too would opt for the blued XSE, just an opinion but it looks better in my book!! :) You have to make your own choice though, depending on availability.

Tough decision, if you see the pics of Slim's pistols, you might just want one of those. His pics are VERY good. Buy them both! Get the current 1991 now and in the 3 short months it takes for this year to end, you can buy the XSE and have your pistol for 2008.

Definitely the blued XSE, for my taste. I saw a blued one for sale at the gun show yesterday that was for sale by an individual, unfired since he got it, for $700 out the door. I almost bought it--it was absolutely beautiful!

Yes, blued is nice. When I was shopping for a blued maybe 3 yrs ago I couldn't find one and settled for a SS. Shot 50 rds, great shooter, very decent slide to frame fit, now sits in the safe.

I have a blued XSE and its a great gun. I'm very happy with it.
