I got my Series 70 off layaway yesterday. Took it to the range and shot Blazer brass hard ball. The gun was very accurate and I had no failures whatsoever, however, when I got home I noticed brass marks on the slide around the port. I also noticed one of the cases was bent around the lip. Is the extractor holding on to long and if so what should I do about it? Also, what about the brass marks on my slide? thanks

How many rounds have you fired with it? I would give the pistol 400 to 500 rounds for the benefit of the new parts.Might go away.A little Hoppes #9 and a brush will take the brass marks off.

feathers73,
Did your cartridge casing appear in a manner similar to the one pictured to the right?

If so, this can be caused by the fact that the ejection port on the Series 70 (current production) has not be lowered and flared. On one of my two pistols, I was experiencing "brass dinging", but it has subsequently ceased. On most of the M1911A-1 pistols that I've owned in the past, this was a common occurence. You might also want to access the "M1911 Home Page", and check out the "Technical Issues". Scrolling down the menu, you'll see an article entitled "Extractor Tuning and Installation Tips".

As pistola stated, the brass marks on your slide are easily removed.

Nice closeup of the dinged brass. Nice to see good pictures of issues and an explanation of why and what to do about them.

Good advice, there's nothing really hard to fix about that brass problem. Some of my guns get the brass marks on them, it comes off easy enough but I don't worry about it. Now if it were making permanent marks or scratches then I'd be worried.

Great pictures and explaination Steve.

Feathers, as Slim and others have said you don't have anything to worry about. My 1975 series 70 dings the brass identically to the ones in Slim's picture.

You could try adjusting the extractor tension. I would check it to see if it were too tight (or too loose).

I would go out and buy some different ammo and shoot it. Not hotter, but a different brand.

thanks very much for all the input. Since my post I went back to my local gun store where there is a highly competent gunsmith that use to work for King's. He indicated it was a normal occurrence on 1911's without the lowered ejection port and not to worry about it. It's nice to have conformation though. thanks.

Forgot to mention, the picture of the brass on the right was exactly what I noticed on some rounds.

If you look up my thread on the range report the first time I fired my 1975 series 70 you'll see that I worried about the same thisng as you.

Of course, feathers73, to properly evaluate what is going on with your new Colt Series 70 "reissue", we must have a picture of it!!! :D

FWIW, I often see the same ding on brass ejected from my Mil-Spec SA 1911-A1 which otherwise runs great.

I wasn't able to get right (my inexperience at the time, I'm sure). Sent it back to Colt and they refinished the slide and "adjusted the ejection angle to factory specifications" as they said. It's great now!

Mine was doing that for the first hundred rounds or so and then stopped. It'll plunk me between the eyes every now and then too.One of these days I'll take a look at that extractor :D I've got to say it is the most accurate, out of the box,1911 I've ever owned.Money well spent.
