View Full Version : lower barrel lug peening against slide stop?

While disassembling my gun today, I noticed that the lower left lug (left side with the muzzle end facing away from me and the lugs pointing to the floor) seems to be getting slightly peened. The right side seems to be fine. I'm assuming that this is not a good thing. What could be the cause and what is the solution?
Thanks

If your pistol has a fitted barrel, then the fit job was bad because the slide stop pin should be marking both sides of those lugs. The best remedy is to have the lugs welded and re-fit...or just buy a new barrel and have it properly installed.

Right on, Bob. There is a lot of bad work out there.

This is the factory barrel and link. I'm not intimately knowledgeable regarding the nuances of the 1911's inner workings. What exactly is going wrong, why is it bad and what can I do about it short of buying a new barrel?
thanks for your thoughts

It's not a big deal. Most factory 1911's built in the past 30 years or so are set up so that the slide stop doesn't strike the bottom lugs at all. Some current production guns are set up pretty close and yours must be pretty close to have even one side marking.
Unless you're after match accuracy, I'd just shoot it.

A picture of the lower lugs with something pointing to the peened area would be most helpful. Lug pictures are worth a thousand words, as it's realy quite cumbersome to use words to describe locations on these wiggly things!
Also, the make & model of the gun, whether you got it new or used, what type of ammo you shoot, and how many rounds you've put through it might help get you a better diagnosis.

I'm assuming nothing will break or crack then?
thanks again!

niemi24s,
I took some pix although the flash reflecting off the barrel makes the problem almost impossible to illustrate. The gun's a Springfield GI which I purchased new, Has about 2500 rounds through it so far, all of which have been 230g FMJs, no +Ps.

Try a pix without the flash, prop or mount the camera to keep it from moving, and use a lamp for light.
Check to see if there's any evidence of the barrel hood hitting the breech face guide blocks.
I, for one, won't pass judgement until I know with certainty where the lower lugs are getting peened and how bad the peening is. Regards

here's the lowdown: the hood has zero interference at the breech end. I took some really lousy photos, couldn't get my camera to focus very well, hopefully you can make out my area of concern.

Do a preview of your post, before posting pic to make sure they are coming thru.
Yours didn't come thru, I see your missing the host server for the pics........

Hi Devin: Looks like you may be trying to use Photobucket. Don't feel bad about the pix. I thought I'd never get it figured out. Finally did, thanks to the instructions in the FAQ section.
