View Full Version : Jammed up solid

I have a fairly new AO Mil-Spec that jams up solid during the extraction phase. The slide moves back and the extractor grabs the shell but she locks up before the empty clears the chamber. I can't get the slide to move at all foward or back. This is the third time this has happened and the only way I could get the slide to move was to whack it with a plastic mallet. Once the brass was out the action cycled fine. I have put 200 rds through the gun and this is a new problem. Also, I am using McCormick SS mags. Any suggestions?

.45 230gr ball. I think it was Winchester.

don't know without seeing it ,but tear it down and check barrel lugs and slide lugs battered or cracked make sure recoil spring is not in reversed small end of spring goes on guide rod first. can you cycle loaded ammo manually , what does the fired brass look like hope every thing works out ok jrhweldon

I am not sure what to look for on the bottom lug but the top lugs look like the front is slightly rounded. The recoil spring is in the right way. Loaded ammo will cycle- the extracted spent shell showed a mark from the extractor and scratches from the chamber.

Take a good look at the chamber with a strong light. Perhaps a chamber that is rough and not polished out.

If so, than a finishing reamer would smooth it up nicely.

Or next to that some very fine emery cloth wraped around a wooden dowel and carefully rotated some in the chamber.

Check the spring pressure on the disconnector. It is the middle leg of the sear spring.

He's getting chamber scratches.
Perhaps one of several problems...

Ditto Pappy! I do not work on these guns so I am not an expert here. I would say he has a bunch of reliablity work un done!

Nor do I work on them except for cleaning and occasional tweeking.

I'm just thinking that if he can hand cycle rounds OK and fired brass has scratches, perhaps the chamber is too rough.
If the chamber is not an issue, then he needs to look elsewhere.

Waitin' on the real experts now....

Hi Chinhgalla: Do you see any evidence that the barrel does not lower far enough at link-down such as longitudinal scratches on the top of the barrel anywhere from the back of the hood to the upper locking lugs?

how far back does slide move before lockup , is brass clearing chamberare scratchs on brass slight or heavy , do they run most of the lenght of the case ( neck to extract grove ) check chamber with Q-tip , cotton fuzz will show ruff spots usually , as stated in earlier post polish chamber with fine sandpaper and champher mouth of chamber lightly good luck jrhweldon

Thanks for the help guys. There were no scratches on the barrel that I noticed. I did polish the chamber and switch to a Wilson mag. The jamming stopped but the gun would stovepipe and fail to pick up the next round. I bought a Wilson Bulletproof extractor and filed/ polished it like I saw in a previous post. So far 150 rds with no hiccups.
