Thinking about fitting a barrel, what kind of files or cutting tools do you guys use on the barrel upper lugs? If I don't get the lug cutter for the bottom lug can I use a round file instead? I am thinking of using a extended jaw dial caliper to measure the upper lugs on the slide, anything wrong with this method? Thanks for the help.

There is a very good sticky on this, I think by 1911Tuner.

I use Brownells' Hammer Squaring File on the uppers. It's square, safe sided, and has a very fine cut. But it's expensive, $35 or so. I think a very narrow, very fine cut pillar file would work as well, probably less than $20.

For the lower lugs you can use a small chain saw file for the initial fitting, be careful not to go too far. Then finish off with needle files, then with sandpaper around a 3/16" rod.

You'll also need a way to keep the barrel centered in the slide while fitting the hood. If you're capable with a file and calipers you can make a jig for this in an hour or so. Same with a gizmo to keep the barrel forced up into the lugs when final fitting the lower lugs - if you can drill and tap a hole this can be made with a piece of round stock fairly quickly. Or Brownells sells both tools.

If you're careful you can get a zero clearance fit, be sure to get good even contact both top and bottom. Be sure to check for adequate link-down clearance when you're done so you don't ruin that exquisite barrel fit.

Go slow, check often. Good luck.

If you use a Kart EZFIT, you can also buy an installation kit with all the tools you need to fit that barrel.
Otherwise, figure about $350.00 for tools.

That is surely true if you're trying to make a living at it, if the amount of time spent in the fitting process is important to you.

If your time is not important, as with we hobbyists, then I contend that you can do a first rate job with a far lower investment. In part it will depend on whether or not a finish reamer is required. With Kart NM and Schuemann sometimes yes, sometimes no.

I've not used the Kart EZ-Fit, but the Kart NMs are excellent and all reports I've read of the EZ-Fits are very positive. It is, as Mr. Eagle notes, a good option.

Don't forget the Go/No-Go chamber gauges.

Headspace: The empty place between some peoples ears.
I do have all the tools to fit a "Gunsmith Fit Barrel" and I know what they cost. I have done a few with a chainsaw file in the early days, but soon realized that tools made the job much easier.
The EZ FIT also comes with a nice booklet of instructions.

Too bad Kart only makes 5" and 6" EZ fit. I am looking for a commander size barrel with an over size hood. The EZ fit tool kit is a cheap way to start. In a way I really want to fit my own barrel but the cost of the tools just doesn't make economic sense to me. I figured I will do may be 2 to 3 barrels in my life time, spending $200-$300 on tools is a waste. What is the going cost for a barrel fitting job? My area is about $300.

Kart will make a 4.25 EZ fit. No one list them online, but give Kart a call.

They are the same price as a 6".

And get it quick! I ordered two last week, and they said the price is about to go up!
