I was wanting to acquire either one or both of these models....Was wanting to get some feedback from you that have either owned one, or have knowledge of these....

I have all 3 Colt Gunsite Pistols, blue, stainless and CCO. I bought a 4th, that one went to one of my kids, he is on a Swat Team in the suburb he lives in. I just wanted to get him on the Colt bandwagon and figured that the Gunsite Pistol would be a good start for him. He uses those plastic things at work.

The only problems I've had were the front sight worked loose. Gunsite Ranch installed night sights for me when I bought the pistol from them and when it popped loose, I sent it to Colt for repair. Seems to be holding. The other problem was rust under the stocks. Seems there was a problem with the thin wood stocks (grips) not being correctly sealed or something like that and it caused a bit of rust under them. I got it taken care of when I sent it back for the front sight problem.

The pistols all have crisp triggers and are very accurate, they are just good pistols. In fact when I went through an NRA Class recently, the lead instructor was walking by us and looking at our grip and stance, when he got to me, he stopped, looked at the pistol and said, "That's a nice Colt!" Some of my several partners that week commented that I shoot very well. A good pistol will help you do that. :D Not to drone on, but I will anyway, ;) when I shot my bright stainless Python that week, the lead instructor was maybe 25' away, observing the firing line and saw that Python and exclaimed, "That's a beautiful Python!" I think so, that's why I bought it!

I have only one, (SS Gunsite), have not shot it yet but I know that I will not sell it. Like most members on this forum will tell you, the Gunsite is a keeper! If you can find one for a good price jump on it!;)

Yes they do. I can't seem to remember why that happened....... ;)

The one I gave away was the most accurate pistol (in my hand at least) I've ever shot. It was better than the other Gunsite Pistols, my SIG and my SCG.

I have the matte blue Colt Gunsite Pistol (Gunsite Service Pistol is a different animal ;)).

As OK said, it aint going anywhere soon.

I had a consecutive pair until I gave one to a good friend.
They both shoot quite well. I don't know if they shoot better than a Gold Cup Trophy but they don't shoot as well as my WW! repro, SCG's or the older Gold Cups. Still, they shoot pretty good.

Nice. I never bought into the "Gunsite" fad. I do keep buying Gold Cups when I see a new one or used one that looks interesting. Lets see...... I am up to about half a dozen Gold Cups and no Gunsites. I am sure the Colt Gunsites are great however.

Justin

The only thing I like better about the gold cup is "NO FRONT COCKING SERRATIONS" But the Gunsites are decked out quite a bit more. I like the serrations on the front strap like the original gold cups before they started putting the wrap arounds on them. I like the sights better and the short trigger and the real beaver tail they put on the gunsite.

*Disclaimer* All statements here are a matter of opinion and don't mean squat even though they are the only opinions I believe that matter. :p

Ok Folks,
another question(on-topic, of course....)......I recently found a blued Gunsite pistol (95% condition) for $1250. Comments? Suggestions?

Also... OD*, please explain the difference between a Gunsite Pistol/Gunsite Service Pistol...I was led to believe that they were one and the same...

For 95% it sounds like it's priced high enough but then again they aren't available everywhere anymore.

Joni Lynn,

Retail would be just a bit shy of $1500. I have $1250 out the door in the first stainless one NIB and more in the second.
If I saw a decent looking blued one for $1250 I think I'd probably buy it.

The Gunsite Service Pistol(s), aka GSP, were built on site by the gunsmiths at the American Pistol Institute/Gunsite Ranch, from existing pistols (or kits) from different manufacturers.

Here is one that was built on a Springfield;

I bought my first one from Gunsite Ranch, OD is right, you might be able to get one new there. I bought my blue and CCO off Gunbroker and the final blue one from Bud's Gunshop. I sent them an email asking if they might have any and a few weeks later they not only did they have one, it was at a good price also.

Very nice indeed Az-coyote! Looks great with the VZ's!
...and is that "savanah gold" granite in the background?

The granite is "Giallo Santo"

The pic makes it look more yellow than it is. Could be the lighting.

Basic Gunsite CCO with Novak night sites, black trigger, and vz's....this is my "stealth" gun. :D

Thanks Justin.

Those aren't the stocks I got from you though, another friend give me those, they are the Westinghouse Micarta jobbies that Brownell's carries.

I just noticed that the white paper overwrap for the box that the Colt Gunsite Pistol comes in has "Gunsite Service Pistol" on it. That's the only place I've ever seen a Colt Gunsite Pistol referred to as a "Gunsite Service Pistol."

I have a Gunsite CCO that has become my primary CCW gun. I had the trigger worked a little (it had some creep) and the throat polished for better feeding, but it now runs 100% with Winchester RA45T. Here she is with the slim Alumagrips she now wears:

And here she is with the stock grips, and with a couple other Colts from my collection:

One question -- I'd like to get some night sights. I'm confused about the choices and what would or would not fit. Novak responded to an email inquiry telling me they couldn't help. Any suggestions?

OD*

The Heinie-Trijicon will fit the front dovetail. This is a bad picture, but they look just like your factory front sight.
http://www.brownells.com/aspx/NS/store/productdetail.aspx?p=6874&st=Heinie-Trijicon&s=

Tooltech Gunsight can install Trijicon vials in your factory Novak rear. http://www.tooltechgunsight.com/index.php?option=com_frontpage&Itemid=1

Thanks. Would that be your recommended set-up, or should I consider replacing the rear sight, too?

OD*
12th August 2007, 08:41
You're welcome sir.

To be honest, I don't think I would put nite-sites in the rear, but if I were going too, yes sir, I would use the Novak's that are on the pistol. I carried a Colt GM with the 3 dot set-up for nearly 18 years, when they finally dimmed enough to have them replaced, I tried the single front lamp on Steve's (wichaka) recommendation. Very fast sight acquisition with the single lamp up front (no dots to line-up), I liked this set-up well enough to do it on 2 pistols and will be doing it on 2 more, I haven't gotten around to buying the Heinie-Trijicon for my Gunsite yet.

I have the Heinie-Trijicon's on these 2 pistols currently;

I'm thinking about adding a front sight like that to my Gunsite. Either that or send the slide off to have the dot added to the front sight.

That might be worth looking into, Lynnie.
I know they can do it, I wonder if it wouldn't cost more to do it that way though? When you factor in shipping of the slide etc.? Then with it being a dovetail, you could always remove it yourself and just send the sight.

Joni Lynn

It would probably be easier to just have Brownell's send me the correct height front sight and then install it myself. Any idea which height front blade is proper for a 5" Colt Gunsite?

OD*
12th August 2007, 14:54
I used the #394-311-185 (.185"), they work great with the Yo-Bo sights. I haven't measured the front sight on the CGP, they appear the same by eye-ballin'. ;)

Joni Lynn
12th August 2007, 14:57
If I measure my front sight, do I measure just the blade or the entire sight including the dovetail?

OD*
12th August 2007, 15:12
Good question, ma'am. I think you measure from the bottom of the base to the top. That would be an excellent question to ask the Brownell techs.

Just the height of the blade itself.

I was talking to Trijicon about a front sight lamp and the law enforcement contact there didn't seem to be familiar with a Colt Gunsite Pistol. He couldn't tell me which one to order. Maybe I'll send them the slide.

I had Novak install Extreme Adjustable sights on my Gunsite and a Lightweight Commander.

The Gunsite required a small cut in the rear dovetail to accomadate the elevation hinge on the sight. Novak milled the front sight dovetail to fit the Novak front sight.

The results were outstanding. Being able to adjust a combat style sight to point of aim that YOU prefer is a real advantage.

You send your slide only and the job takes about a week.

The Extreme Adjustable is available in plain black, White dot, and Tritium dot.
