I attempted to replace the MIM thumb safety which came on my Springer GI with an Ed Brown safety. Everything came apart as planned. When I try to replace the new thumb safety, it will not go in the last 1/16th of an inch or so. It doesn't seem to be matching up with the sear. I tried putting the old one back in to no avail. I'm sure it's something simple and silly, but I don't want to force anything. Suggestions???

thanks in advance

first cock the hammer - it will only go in with the hammer cocked.
Now use a credit card or a thin PLACTIC something to depress the plunger spring so the safety will snap into place.

As for the new thumb safety. It has to be fitted to the sear. VERY IMPORTANT!

If it drops in you are very lucky. If not then you need to get a small flat file

Remove the MSH retainer pin
slide the MSH down
remove the grip safety (have to take out the org. thumb safety.
Reinstall the MSH ( no grip safety)
remove the plunger spring.
insert the new thumb safeth and check the fit to the sear.

it should fit snug to the sear - file the lug - little strokes - keep testing the fit of the lug to the sear.

As for the last 1/16th on installation- you need to compare the lengths of the safeties, and adjust as posted above- carefully. It sounds like the new safety may need to be fitted in length ( to the hammer strut) as well as to the sear. If the lengths are right, double check yourself to make sure that you had the plunger out of the way when you tried to install the safety. I jammed myself up on the plunger the first 2 times I detail stripped mine, before I remembered to slow down, and follow the reassembly steps.

I just finished filing the safety down a touch. Works like a champ, also much less "notchy" feel. I learned a little more about my 1911 today.
