I have my RIA 1911A2 am trying decide on grips. There are so many woods out there like Cherry wood, Kind wood, pau ferro, South African Hardwood, Walnut, Gonalco Alves, I see these grips standing alone, but it is difficult to imagine on my gun.
Would you post pics of your 1911 wood grips, and tell me about what wood you selected.

Here's what's on my 38 super right now

Those grips came from these folks;
http://www.woodgrips.com./1911%2045%20grips.htm
If you drag your cursor over the wood types offered
(just under the gun)
you'll see the grips change to that wood
I'm quite pleased with the the cocobolo half checkered grips I bought from them.
Beautiful grain, checkering and finish is flawless.

Pachmayr American Legend.
Just bought another set this week.
Might put them on my Para, I donno yet.

I've been eye balling Esmeralda's grips
(she has an ad at the top of the page)
Check out her stuff if you haven't already.
What's nice about her grips, (according to her site) the grips in the pic you choose are the very grips you'll receive.
I like that.

Grips by Esmeralda. I wanted a textured Grip. But, I think that checkered grips are a wee bit too textured.

I love the factory checkered walnut grips that came with my GI but they chafed my right love handle when I carried it, so they were swapped out for some smooth bocotes.

Thanks Pappy.
When plunking down a hunnurt beans, it's a comfort to know the one's you choose are the one's you get.
I'm afraid to inquire about prices from the Norway dude :scared:
as the saying goes,
"if you have to ask, you can't afford it"
I'm going to search the web for a source for exotic woods.
I have the tools and some wood working skills.
Just a matter of getting motivated to make a few trial grips of oak or walnut I have on hand.
If I can make them to my liking, I might try hacking up a big buck piece of lumber :D

lanceriley - where did you get your grips from?
Thanks!
got it from smitha and alexander. I just love the squared bottom grips. it's flush with the frame. (and looks good with the magwell too!) got it for $45. It's not as good as an esmeralda grip but at that time, it was the only thing I could afford.

Lanceriley, like the grips you put on your full size 1911, been looking for a pair like yours because you have the mag. guide like mine. Putting the standard grips on that have the angle on the bottom edge does not look good. My grips are a dark color wood that I don`t like and even came up with though to try to remove the finish on them. Have not found anyone that has gone that far. Mine is the special Kimber design on the Tac. Pro 11.

Ajax makes many grips. Checkered and smooth, with and without meds. Google Ajax grips. Here are a couple wood grips (and one of their black perl grips on several of my Colts).

Esmeralda is great. The Desert Ironwood grips on my Colt SCG several posts back are from her. Her service is great and prices reasonable for what you get. I also have some of her grips in Purple Heart on Kimber Grand Raptor.
http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e193/dakota1911/kimber1b.jpg
Some of her Cocabola grips on a Colt XSE LW Commander. That is 10 rounds, slow fire at 25 yards by the way (bullseye). Great grips on a great gun.
http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e193/dakota1911/comxse2b.jpg
And some of her Andean Alder grips on a 1988 GCNM
http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e193/dakota1911/grips6r.jpg
I also like Carbon Creations grips, here on my S&W 1911Sc.
http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e193/dakota1911/sw1911sc2.jpg
Recently I bought some cheap "retro" Colt reproduction grips to put on a Commander I bought for carry. This will protect the nice checkered wood grips that came on it.
http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e193/dakota1911/r_per_1.jpg
I sort of liked the grips that came on my older RIA.
http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e193/dakota1911/ria1r.jpg
And the one I recently bought.
