Just thinking today and wondering if anyone here has access to complete serialization/production data for various Colt 1911 models. (post WW II) If not perhaps we could all pool our collective information and compile this into a final post. It seems to me that this would make an excellent sticky.

Hunter, that's an excellent and comprehensive list. But, everything seems to end around 1976. I've got two out-of-production Colts that fall after that time period, and Colt wants to sell me a letter to learn when they were made. Is there a supplement for post '76? Thanks.

If you call Colt customer service with the serial number they can tell you date of birth over the phone in a few minutes and it is free.

Do they also answer this kind of queries through emails? What is their customer service email address by the way?

I called them today on my Gold Cup. Very nice people. I ordered a few T-shirts while I was talking to them. Nice shirts for 7.99.

There is a small pocket size book written by R.L. WILSON that tells all production dates for 1911's,1911a1's and all the other pistols made by colt and long guns too.Dates of production are from1837 to 1978.you usually can buy this book from a book seller at a local gun show.I will post more info after I go to the next gunshow in my area.

I almost forgot to add that the serial numbers are how the sections of this book are used along with the year and different models of guns.

Thanks for the info, I called the 800 # and found out the super 38 I just bought was made in 1948. This was my father-in-laws pistol.

I have a feeling that not having an email address is a self defense measure. As many old Colt's as there are around, they would probably have to have additional server space, plus extra employees just to keep up with the date requests.
