hi

its time to change my springs, the stock tension is about 16lbs i think. any suggestions on how heavy the replacement should be?

thanks!

What kind of gun is it?

Assuming this is a 5" gun, stock could be 16#. Assuming you never shoot anything hotter than standard factory pressure ammo, that's fine. JMB's original stock spec was about 16.5#. I use Wolff 17# recoil springs and love them.

sorry about that. i forgot the specs. yes it is for a standard government 5" barrel. umm... the range loads i shoot are spicy but not hot, if you put it that way. we train like we shoot so the range loads are of the same potency as our carry loads. bullets would be running around 875 fps to about just below 900.

I thought JMB's original spec was about 14 pounds ...

I'm sure I read that here, somewhere.

Yep, the original was for around 14lbs, but the Army wanted something a bit more.........so 16 it was.

Stick with the 16 lbs one. It should work fine.

one last one. since the springs come in packs, the firing pin spring comes in the same tension of the recoil spring?

14 i think is a bit too light. recoil might wreck the slide?(just thinking out loud)

Been running 14-16lb springs in my guns for years, 16-17lbs in my Commanders, not a sign of battering (wear) anywhere.

Unless you have special needs, I"d stick with the standard factory 16# spring. Wolff springs includes what they call an extra power firing pin spring with all their recoil springs. I have no idea what the # rating is other than being heavier then the factory spring.
