View Full Version : Can a CBOB 10mm be as reliable as a Glock?

Having small hands single stack appeals to me. HOWEVER, what doesn't appeal to me is paying $900 for a picky pistol. I do understand to an extent that 1911's are built with more hand fitted parts and tight tolerances.
I like the power of the 10mm round in the pretty and hand fitting 1911 platform.
I've seen threads after searching every forum that indicate I have cause for concern about reliability on the Dan Wesson CBOB.
I really want to like the DW CBOB 10mm. Am I wrong to be considering this pistol for daily CCW?
While I haven't felt it in person, I'm almost sure the Glock 29 will be to thick for my hands. I can probably force it to work OK, but would prefer something I can use one handed if need be.
I don't understand why people would have issues with a $900 gun if Dan Wesson test fires each one.
Is it possible/likely to get a 2007 DW CBOB 10mm that is reliable as a Glock from Day 1?
Thanks a lot in advance.

So far my 07 cbob has been flawless as has my RZ-10 06 model..
Just like everything they depend how you feed them and treat them .
Glocks are not as great as lots think they are i sold my 20 to buy the Cbob in 10mm

I have shot a G29 before with full power loads, and must say it is a handful. I have never shot a 10mm in a 1911 platform. With that said, I would not hesitate to get a DW.

Hi Bud,
Have read your posts on other forums.
Would the CBOB make a good daily CCW in your opinion?

After a couple hundred rounds to make sure no problems absolutely .. I carry a 4 1/4 1911 now only gripe is what the cbob solves on some shirts they like to hang up on the corner of the grip other it doesn't matter..
i also don;t notice any difference when shooting the cbob VS a fullsize or a commander with normal grip

Every 1911 I own is as least as reliable as any Glock I've actually seen on the range; I'd hope the Dan Wesson guns are at least that good.

Dean,
First off, just to be fair, I have enough experience with Glocks to understand that for me (and only speaking for me), they are a no-go. They don't fit my hand and I cannot shoot them worth a darn. Is that the guns fault? NO.
My CBOB went through what I consider to be an acceptable 200 round break-in period. After that point (which involved a thorough cleaning of pistol and mags and new recoil spring), I am at 2000 rounds without a single malfunction. I have shot a mix of 90%/10% reloads to factory and they all work. To answer your question, my 10mm CBOB is completely reliable and has become a carry gun for me. I trust the gun with my life and know that it works for me.

Thanks for the replies, folks.
I'm set up for having several good sales over the next couple months.
So, I may get the CBOB and a 'plastic' 9mm gun in the coming weeks. :)
bigmedicine: You really thought just 200rds was enough to trust it for carry?
I'm thinking 300-400 or thereabouts. But I suppose if it's flawless for 200rds there would be good confidence.

Dean,
The 200 rounds was the specific round count of the last malfunction (failure to return to battery - also could have been diry mag and/or operator trouble). I did not carry it until I reached 1K rounds.
This will probably curse me forever, but I am most blessed to have 2 absolutely perfect functioning 1911's - the CBOB in 10 mm and my Kobra Carry. Different beasts to be sure, but still perfect.

Bud has pretty much said what I would say so not much reaston to repeat it. 1911=great carry gun, just shoot a few hundred rounds through it before carry.
This is what I like to do with any gun before shooting, new or used. I think it helps in keeping down problems:
Field strip and clean, new or not. I tend to clean a lot. Lube properly and I like to use slide glide on the rails. It usually makes either new or used slide smooth like a baby's butt.
Lightly lube and Work the magazines. Take a pencil or something and push the follower up and down a bunch of times. New ones will slide smoother. Then I load and unload the mags several times, it seems to rub any burrs off. Then I put the loaded mags in the gun and rack the full mag of rounds through it by hand. I do this several times. I can tell it getting smoother.
Something else I do first that not everyone would want to do is when I have the gun apart I check the ramp and polish it if needed. I also stone the hammer, sear, disconnector, pins, trigger, trigger channel and frame where the hammer, sear, etc. go. I take apart and stone the mag follower, and yes even wilson plastic followers slightly. I am just polishing all of this and getting rid of any burrs.
I know some of you guys probably think this is overkill and it may be, but in my mind it keeps any problems to a minimum and smooths the trigger and action. A number of the ftf's on new guns (not all of course, but quite a few) are due to new magazines. I think working them stops that from happening. Of course shooting it will do pretty much the same thing (except for stoning the gun parts) but I usually have some time on my hand before I shoot and I like to put in a greider short trigger before I shoot it the first time so I have it apart anyway. It's kind of like breaking it in before shooting it.

Xsqiud I bet when ya do that you pretty much have Zero problems with the gun dont ya?
What do they say Attention is in the details? A production won't get as much as a custom like Baer . brown , or wilson .. course the price isnt near the same.. labor costs a lot of $$$$$$$
I always tell people don't forget to ad in your labor when you do something to get a true saving est..
And i really like slide glide also esp for a carry gun as it doesn't Leech or run

You are right Bud, I pretty much have zero problems after doing that. Most problems on a new production gun is the little attention to details like you say and doing that goes a long way. IT doesn't take much at all. I love slide glide, it stays put and smooths the slide right out.

Nope to bad they dont pay attention to the details i understand time is money but seems less returns would cost less..
Course even in my job i see the same thing

I'm new to the 1911's, I've been wanting one for quite some time and just picked up a Kimber Compact CDP, once I get this sorted out I'll be going for a 10mm, been a fan of the 10mm since it came out.
Currently own a G29, but need a DW or Kimber...I used the slide guide on my Glocks and have a tub in the basement, I'll give it a shot on the Kimber.
One of you guy's has a nice set of twins...that just doesn't sound right after the last post...anyways I mean the 10mm's Dan Wesson's

yep, do they shoot as nice as they look? I'm going to be looking for a 10mm for woods carry, as a replacement/supplement for my G29 and I'll want a 5" for the extra velocity. It seems to be DW or Kimber, at least in my tax bracket, obviously you went with the DW over the Kimber in the 5"...
Any particular reason why?
Bud White

Quality .. I'm no kimber fan .. The quality from kimber just isn't there any more ..
The DW uses 1 MIM part the mag release they are tight on par with my Les Baer and that is saying a lot the fit and finish is on par with the Baer's also

I have a Kimber and Dan Wesson. The only thing in common between the 2 is that the Kimber is based on an updated (tongue in cheek) 1911 design. The Dan Wesson is vastly superior in appearance, functionality, and quality. How do I make this bold claim? My stock Kimber TLE was junk (thus the need for overhaul after 2 trips back for service) and my Dan Wesson is 100% reliable.

I'm lucky enough to own a Dan Wesson and a Glock. For accuracy the dan Wesson wins hands down. For reliability you cant beat a Glock. They are truly the AK47 of the pistol world. They will shoot under under the worst condition with any ammo all of the time avery time. The only problem is pistol whiping someone with a plastic gun is not the same. Just kidding.

Well, after fondling many guns at the gun shop including G29 and 1911's I ended up ordering a HK P2000SK. :)
It just fit my hand *perfectly*.
Ordered...
P2000SK 9mm DA/SA (no LEM in stock) w/ NS and 3 mags (from police guns dot com)
6 USP Compact/P2000 10rd mags (CDNN)
2 P2000SK mags with flat floor plat (CDNN)
1 13rd USPc mag (CDNN)
[Will have 12 magazines for lead flying goodness! :D]
VM2 in black with extra doo dads to hide stuff better. (LASports)
DeSantis Nemisis Pocket Holster (DeSantis Yahoo store)
Uncle Mikes #12 Ankle Holster (Cheaper than dirt)
4 boxes CCI Blazer 115gr for practice (hope the SK likes it) (CTD)
2 Boxes Gold Dot 124gr (CTD)
Tried to order the X-grip, but HK rep was on vacation. Will fill out order form and hopefully someone will process it.
It's a good CCW starter kit I think.
The G29 was just - well, wrong in my hands. GINORMUS. Wanted something I was confident holding/shooting one handed.
Maybe I'll get a full size 10mm in the near future. :) Or really, just a nice .45 1911.

Hey thanks for the info on DW versus Kimber, I have 205 rounds through a new Kimber Compact PDC, with over 20 FTRB's thus far...I'm staying positive and hope it can work it self out or I can fix it...but I'm somewhat surprized and disappointed after paying $1050+tax for a gun that's supposedly out of a Custom shop.

Jitterbug, I had the same problem with a compact PDC. I thought it would be the perfect size for CCW and coming from the custom shop would mean that it would be a cut above the rest - wrong!! I am not the greatest shot in the world, but can usually hit the broad side of a barn from the inside - but not with that PDC. I couldn't get it to group with a zip gun. I finally traded it in on a Nighthawk Talon II with bobtail. I felt I needed to treat myself after that bad experience. :D

The Compact is on it's way back to Kimber, it shoots great! Mine is extremely accurate, now if I can only get it to go bang everytime...
I'm really intrigued by the Dan Wesson's, unfortunately they don't make an aluminum framed gun.
I'll probably go with the RZ in 10mm for woods gun. And be carrying Glocks and a Kahr PM9 until I can sort out a Compact/Commander carry gun. From what I've read the Nighthawk sounds really nice.

After a trip to Kimber and my installing a new recoil spring the CDP is running fine now and shoots extremely well. Now to find a 10mm...the Dan Wesson sounds like a nice gun.
