What magwell would work well for a SW1911? I have this model: http://www.smith-wesson.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?catalogId=10001&storeId=10001&productId=14720&langId=-1&isFirearm=Y

Any of the aftermarket magwells should work on your pistol.... Affter that, it is just a matter of finding one you like....

How are the drop in magwells held in place?

Are permament magwells soldered/welded in place?

Some of the drop in housings are held in place by the grips.. A little tang goes under the grips and around the lower screw..(Wilson) Others attach to the mainspring housing.... The under the grip style require different grips that are clearenced...

Permanent magwells are a quite extensive and permanent modification. They can either be brazed or welded on... Here is a good pictorial... http://www.rogersprecision.com/id11.html
