I remember reading a thread here a while ago from a member that made their own checkered 1911 grips. I can't remember the name of the thread or the person that posted it.
What I was wondering is where can someone learn how to make their own checkered 1911 grips ? I'm sure this would fall under wood work but I'm just interested in learning to make my own 1911 grips and checker them.
Any info is appreciated, thanks.

That is a good question Tedfs, would be nice to make some of your own custom grips!I am not much into wood working, but i am sure some of the other members might be able to chime in with some ideas!
can't help with how to cut the checkering right and straight.
I'd shutter to think what I could do with a file or dremel with out a jig or fixture to keep things straight and true.
seems I saw a a place that sells blanks for grips that you shape and finish yourself.
i was browsing the 'net when i saw them, but can't recall where.
maybe a google search will bare fruit.
I've thought about making my own for fun.
I have a few tools and some wood working experience.
But have so many unfinished projects and hobbies now, I doubt I'll ever get around to trying my hand at grip making

LoRL, my friend Patrick Nee, the president of Woodgrips.com could welcome you, I know he is always loaded and a helping hand will be really useful.
No, seriously, I have no idea.

Just one of those things I was wondering about, as you don't find articles on making your own grips on the net like you would on almost every other aspect of the 1911.
LoRL, my friend Patrick Nee, the president of Woodgrips.com could welcome you.
I'll give your friend Patrick a +1 and a plug, John.
I bought a set of their grips.
Quality and wood grain was excellent on the set I recieved and shipped out in a timely manner

Yes, Pat has some fine woods. He spends most of his time in Nicaragua or Panama or some other country in the south, looking for the wood (or at least that's what he tells me, I think he is simply enjoying the ... local attractions).

I remembered seeing something about making your own grips on this website (not the message forum, but the main site). I went back and checked and here it is:

Hope this helps.
I've made a number of grips with the following instructions. You can see some of my pictures in another thread.
