Just traded a Glock for a Colt Combat Commander.

There were several issues I noticed about the Commander.

I previous owner did say he had malfunctions, but could intelligently say what kind.

Although the serial number begins with an 80, the slide does NOT have the firing pin block. Should it? Or am I assuming that the serial number does not correspond with the 70/780 series models.

The barrel hood was jeweled, is this standard??

The barrel to frame fit was pretty sloppy, with play/space on each side of the barrel.

When the pistol was in battery (unloaded) there was slight movement when I pushed down on the barrel hood (possible link work).

The finish was pretty fair (Blued).

The pistol is presently at my gunsmith (Alan Tillman, in Austin). He hasn’t got back with me yet, because he’s ALWAYS busy.

Please forgive my ignorance, but give me any and all of your opinions on the Commander. This is my first Colt, and I’m tickled to death :D to have gotten if for the Tupperware.

I want it to be a reliable carry pistol.

Alright you Colt enthusiasts, let me know what you think.

Well anytime you can trade a Glock for a Colt, you're always ahead! Even if the Colt has been cut, rusted, and put thru a rock crusher! :D

When Colt went to the Series 80 style, they used up their pre-80 stuff, so you may have one of the 'transition' guns. PM me the ser# and I'll let you know.

Jewled, not standard......

Very little play is allowed when you push down on the hood, but not much.

Post pics when you get it back.

Wichaka answered your specific questions, but I can tell you one thing, if Alan is working on your gun, you can expect a fine pistol. I would trust Alan Tillman with any 1911.

Here is a story for you guys, how my 9mm 1911 came to reality:

Some years ago, a John Moses Browning great-great-grandson, wrote to me to compliment me about M1911.ORG and the reference it includes on John Moses. The guy's name was Bob Prince and he used to run a shop called "Cast & Blast". Bob was kind enough to send me some things related to his great-great-grandfather, such as a book and a medallion that was issued to celebrate J.M.Browning work. I still have them and treasure them.

Anyway, after exchanging several e-mails, Bob suggested that he wanted to offer me a 1911 as a gift. At that time, Alan Tillman (or ART Enterprises, as Alan's company is called) was a sponsor of my site. Soon the deal was closed. Bob would provide the pistol and Alan would customize it, in exchange for a year of advertisement in M1911.ORG.

To this day, that 9mm 1911 is still as tight as a vault, has never had one single malfunction and is used in Olympic-style 30+30 competition, in every match I do. And since that day, Alan is considered to be a friend. He and his wife have an open invitation whenever they come to Greece, to stay with me and Lena.

Dan0, you reminded me of some nive times. When you see Alan, or when you speak to him, please give him my best regards. Unfortunatelly, I have lost contact with Bob Prince, I sincerely wish nothing bad happened to him.

I know it's been six months, but my Colt Combat Commander got back today from Alan Tillman. He is an Artist. I hope to shoot it Saturday. He fit the frame to the slide, put in a Kart Match Barrel ,fitted barrel bushing, Wilson hi-ride beavertail safety, Wilson ambi thumb safety, MMC Tritium 3 D System, Black park-T Finish, 19 lbs main spring, tune and reshape the extractor, new sear, and 3 ½ lbs trigger. He is an Artist.
