From the United States south and southwest, grips using real rattlesnake skin:

Currently, on a Colt's 38 Super Government Model, Series 80, stainless steel. These seem to be well-made. I don't expect them to be heavy-carry grips, but they are unusual and beautiful in their own right. Enjoy.

Now those are unusual and unique. I've never seen any of those before. You keep this up, you'll make me get a possum holster. :D ;)

They do seem to be well-made. They fit my Colt's 38 just fine. They've got some kind of preservative finish on the snakeskin. They actuall FEEL very good in the bare hand. Guy who makes these, evidently knows the platform; he made a special cut on the left one for the plunger tube.
I don't reckon to carry them constantly, that's the reason I put them on the 38 Super, as I prefer a .45, although the 38 Super is a really good round, especially outside. I may load it up and strap it on as I've got to run up northeast of town this afternoon to look at a piece of property. The guy only charges $35.00/set for them. He's in Mississippi. I have some (bad) experiences with rattlesnakes... but, like Animal's Spider grips, I think they're apropos for a good 1911. Kinda like the biohazard grips I used to have...
Barbeque gun, Bud, AMEN. Hey, Animal, POSSUM holster? There you go, sir!
Thanks for the interest, folks. Y'all take care.

I've seen those advertised, but wondered what the grip surface was like. You dont think you'll carry them daily? Is that out of concern for their durability?
Bud, what about a set of stags, mammoth ivory?

PingPong: they're pretty nice to feel, actually. Yes, my concern with something like this would be the durability, although they appear to be very well-made and the way they're finished, durable to a reasonable level... I did strap on a Horseshoe Leather holster and carry the 38 Super this afternoon, and I'm still wearing it inside although open on my hip. I do want to carry it some, just to see how they do... that will take a bit, though, as I'm not allowed to carry or have a firearm in my truck at work.
Bud...
OH... MY... Wow. WOW! NO, I had not seen this beauty of yours... Doubly-incredibly beautiful because it's a MARK IV, the very first 1911 platform I ever held, handled, and field-stripped, cleaned, and re-assembled, which gave me the 1911 FeVeR big time... this one is just... it's stainless steel, oh, my... and that engraving!!! Very tasteful, very balanced, very special! Those grips you've got on it NOW are WONDERFUL, sir... I would think just about ANYTHING short of duct tape wrap would look GREAT on THIS pistol, just because of the beauty of the gun!!! Heck, duct tape might look good on this one... I have seen hundreds of beautiful 1911s here, Bud, but THIS one... well, to me, it's just... minimum top 5, if not higher... Thank you for sharing this!

That's a shame, must've been a BEAUTIFUL set. That said, however... You have a BEAUTIFUL pistol there. Those grips are VERY unique and unusual, very tasteful... I have a number of tattooes, and that scrimshaw on them remind me of classical Asian or Japanese tattooing. The design also complements the engraving, as well as the pistol... Someone had excellent taste in engraving and grips, to have "commissioned" this one, sir.
You did get a beauty. It's like me: I managed to get a USGI from Colt's 1918 (late) contract run, in really excellent shape and fully-functional and original; and a WWI Repro in the limited production from Colt's. I'd LOVE to have another excellent USGI, or another WWI Repro... probably won't ever have either. But, I AM extremely thankful for not only these two beautiful arms, but also my other 9 firearms. To have this "member" of the set, sir, you to me got the best of the "bunch". That is one beautiful 1911. I'm HAPPY for you, Bud! Enjoy it and cherish it. Hey, they're ALL good... but some are really special. This one's special.

YOU made a wise decision: these fit the pistol PERFECTLY. I reckon the rattlesnake skins would look good on it, too, or something like this:
Ajax black pearl polymers:

Pewter Western motifs:

Ajax white pearl polymers:

Or these, which you've recently seen in another thread here (my favorites):

I'm checking into some Gun Grips custom Alumagrips with the state of Texas seal and my initials in them. You might think about those as well, they come in black, OD green, and "clear" (natural silver aluminum"), and he also makes some polymer ivories like the current ones you have in customs.
Still, that Mark IV is ONE BEAUTIFUL GUN, grips included. Personally, grip pimp though I am, I wouldn't change it. But that's your choice. It'll look GREAT with anything you decide to put on it, Sir.

I don't care what brand, type, or style of a handgun a man or woman likes, THIS Mark IV is just PRICELESS. It is a BEAUTY. I LOVE it. I'm happy for Bud.

I'm taking the 38 to work tomorrow, to show the grips to a couple of my gun buddies out there... have to park off-property, though. Give everyone some exercise at lunch! :D

I guess basically the rattlesnake skin ones fall more into my "show" category, than my "carry/shoot" category... although all guns, except First Lady, are working guns. Since I prefer .45 in my 1911s, and since the snakeskins look good on a stainless steel gun, I put them on the 38 Super. Seems they're made to last, reasonably; they're well-mounted on the backings and coated with a polymer looking stuff, very cleanly done, but just don't think I'd want them say, on my Mil-Spec or Rock Island, since those two (esp the Mil-Spec) get carried a LOT. For some reason--just eye-balling them next to one of my blued or my Parked guns--seems they "fit" better on a shiny gun than a "black" gun. But, would work on a "black" gun I think...
