BNIB M1911 has a thumb safety that does not function properly. With the hammer cocked, safety engaged, trigger is pulled, safety lever disengages and hammer drops. What is the cause of this?

Sounds like a bad thumb safety. The thumb safety blocks the sear from moving and releasing the hammer. The pistol should not have left the factory that way. There is a misalignment there or a defective part. I would look at where the sear and safety engage. Assemble the pistol without the pistol grips and grip safety and look very carefully at what is happening. Being a new in the box pistol I would send it back just to make sure. Depending on the manufacturer, it should be done under warranty.

Spindly is on the right track but we need a little more info.

safety lever disengages
Do you mean the safety doesn't work, or are you saying the safety lever actually moves to the off position?

With the hammer in full cock position, safety on, pull the trigger, the thumb safety moves down and the hammer drops all in one motion.

The safety is not fitted properly to the sear. Could be a minor fitting issue, or could need a new safety.

I'm with Wichaka, fitting issue. I'm leaning more towards the major side though. It needs to go to a 1911 smith and get checked out.

Thanks all for the input. I've contacted the manufacturer's rep and it's going back. This pistol is replacement for one that had issues...hmmmm!?
