Well I got over the fear of "site unseen" and took a little gamble that has paid off :D . Was able to find a Sevice Model ACE .22LR NIB or so it appears.
You can see the serial# on the box, let me know if you can date it. My guess is 78/79 but not sure on that. Here are the photos enjoy ;)

Very nice! Looks like proofhouse is lacking in Ace Serial numbers so a call to Colt may help.
Have you had a chance to shoot it yet?

I am a little hesitant on this one as it appears this one is unfired :( .
I would consider a second one if I could find a good buy on a fired one.
It looks like a gas to shoot and I love the sights on the pistol :D
Thanks Hunter

Oh Lord... we don't see these too often... thanks for the posting and you owe me a keyboard... :p
Okay, on with business here... some help dating your splendid and pristine SM Ace. The serial number on yours is almost 1000 preceding mine. Kathy, while at Colt, gave me a date of 1980 for my SM Ace. I don't know how many of these they made annually, but my guess was not too many... so your intuition of a date in "78/79" is very likely correct... but they are close by serial number, so yours could also be born in 1980.
That is one beautiful Colt... and I've thought often of finding another one NIB "old stock" and keeping it that way. I will tell you they are a treat to shoot... and that's probably not helping you if you're thinking of keeping your new pistol in "mint" condition.
I vote for shooting it... and that's only if you cannot find a "used" one to assign shooter duty too. Yeah, it's tempting to keep her unfired... but you may never otherwise experience the joy of shooting one of these fabulous .22LR 1911A1 Colt pistols.
Larry Starling bought a "NIB" old stock SM Ace as related in his thread in March of this year...
Colt Service Model Ace.... (http://forum.m1911.org/showthread.php?t=28518&highlight=service+model)
Now, I've always tried to keep abreast of what these are selling for in the market place (since I have one)... and I hate to be so crass as to ask... but if you're so inclined, how about sending me a PM if you don't mind... I simply want to know what they're going for nowdays? I saw one on GB a few months ago that was NIB "old stock" and it went for almost $1,900!!!
The very FIRST Colt I ever owned...

I know what you mean! I have a NIB SM Ace as well so I have this all-Colt "Frankenstein" Ace (.22 Conversion Unit on a Colt frame) dedicated for range work:

Tailgunner, I used to keep a set of identical Pachmayr grips on my SM Ace... they do look good! I'm saving them for a Commander now.

I know many absolutely revile Pachmayrs but for shooters I think they're great, so comfortable! And with the little "swoosh" with the Colt logo, I think they look slick as heck!
I have Colt/Pachmayrs on all my Colt shooters, even Browning/Pachmayrs on my Mk. II Hi-Power shooter.

Those are the "primo" Pachmayr grips for a Colt... the ones with that "swoosh" having Colt's stylized logo with the "C" wrapping under the "OLT"... and of course the gold prancing pony Colt medallion. I bought my set years ago, traveling thru Belle Chase, Louisiana, finding these at a gunstore I just happened to stop at. It didn't matter what they cost, I saw them and had to have 'em right then. This was in the early 80's and Pachmayr's seemed to be a bit more popular than now. Perhaps they'll come back into vogue someday. I consider the design a timeless classic.
