I picked up one of these pistols last week and while going through the pistol
I was concerned with the slide fit. The rest of the pistol seemed to be in
terrific condition, with all edges sharp and clean. In checking the rails I
could not see any wear to be concerned about. The pistol has the alloy frame
and the steel slide. I haven't taken it to the range to see how it performs
yet but I have shot it informally at a range outing last weekend. It performed
flawlessly but I can't vouch for it's accuracy yet. My question is: Is the slide
fit looser on these pistols that have the different metals? Can the slide fit be
'taken up' somehow if it becomes necessary to improve accuracy? TIA

I had one years ago, with the same slop in the slide to frame fit, but it shot very well. I wouldn't worry about it, but I would stay away from full loads on a consistent basis. I shot the frame out of mine.

Thanks for the info. I feel a little easier now. This was supposed to be a safe
queen and with the exception of the frame fit everything else looks like it is not
far from the day it was purchased.

I have a couple Commanders, those with alloy frames and their daily dose are my hand loads, with an occassional hardball put thru them.

If you stay with this, the gun will last a very looooooong time.

Can you share what you are using for hand loads?

I have a ltwt officers that I have put a couple hundred rounds of hardball 230 gr through, and I bought it used. So far, no signs of damage at all. You may want to peruse the forums about magazine followers to use with alloy framed guns. The "devel" type followers have been said to have caused damage to a couple of members alloy framed guns. I don't recall that any were Colts though.
