View Full Version : Brownells colt slide assemblies
I am looking for someone who knows about brownells colt slides. I am looking at the following slide and have a few questions.
http://www.brownells.com/aspx/NS/store/ProductDetail.aspx?p=4668&title=SLIDE+ASSEMBLY%2c+ENHANCED%2c+DULL+SS
Is this a series 70 or series 80 slide? What exactly does slide assembly mean? Does it mean it comes with some parts installed?
If this is a series 80 slide, is there a downside to putting this on a series 70 frame?

You can install a Series 80 slide on a Series 70 frame but you will need to remove the firing pin block and spring. There may or may not be some fitting.
You can call the Brownells tech line to see what Series the slide is and what is included. My guess is assemble includes the barrel, bushing, guide rod, firing pin, firing pin spring. firing pin stop, extractor, and spring. In my mind an assemble translates to a complete unit but for what the have priced that slide at I would verify that. You may want to be sure that slide includes sights.

I read it as a series 80 with no parts installed, not even sights. That's based on the schematic which shows separate numbers for each part, including the slide. But I'd call Brownells just to make sure as Hunter indicated.
There is no problem putting a series 80 slide on a series 70 frame. Just a hole where the plunger would have gone into the slide.

I would believe it was a bare slide as the price indicates but using the word assemble throws me.

Brownells phone number is toll free. There's no substitute for asking the people who know. They have always been both helpful and courteous when I've called with questions.

I ordered a series 80 enhanced slide from them for the same price-it comes with sights, nothing else.
Yep. I've bought several Colt slide 'assemblies' from Brownells. You get a bare slide, sometimes with a front sight. Maybe with a fixed rear, I can't recall. Never with an adjustable rear (that's another 'assembly'). I think it's Colt that uses the word 'assembly' to describe their slides.
If it's an "ENHANCED" slide, it's a Series 80. there were no Enhanced Series 70s. ;)

I recently got a 5" Series 70 slide from Brownells. It had the front and rear sights, firing pin and firing pin spring and the firing pin stop.
slipped it on a Series 70 lower end and was ready to go.
thanks for the info guys. I will call them tomarrow.
Thanks guys, I just got off the phone with Brownells. Its a complete slide assembly minus the barrel and bushing. IT is a series 80 slide.
I went ahead and ordered it so it should be here by friday and i will give a report on it.

That's good to know. I haven't bought them in several years - they had some Elite adj. sight models for less than half the normal slide prices about 3 years ago, I'm not sure why. I bought 4 of them.
Anyhow, I'd like a S70 slide also. Would you mind giving the list price for the slide assy? (Is it blue?) Thanks,
here are the prices of the full size slides
Blued gold cup $394.21
Blued series 80 $431.25
Dull stainless series 80 $315.46
Blued series 70 $384.44
Some reason the Stainless is about 100 bucks cheaper.
This does not include the dealer/gunsmith discount.
Thanks! They aren't cheap, but they're Colts.

If you get a gunsmith or dealer to buy it for you, you save 20%. I got the stainless slide for 260 shipped
You did very well! Good job.

GBW, you may want to order one if it is in stock. One of the smiths at Brownells told me that they don't special order any Colt parts they (Brownells) don't have in stock. Or something to that effect. I took it to mean that Colt does not put a high priority on parts shipments. You may have to wait until a new run is made and shipped if the item you want is not in stock.
Thanks guys, be doin' it this week. Had to do some arithmetic - my wife bought new wood floors, new stainless kitchen, new crystal chandelier, painted all walls and ceilings. And she says MY hobbies are expensive! So now I'm digging lead out of my range so I can re-cast the bullets!
Anyhow, I've an old S70 that I had a 'gunsmith' install Bo-Mar sights on many years ago, he sort of made a mess of it. So I want a 'genuine' S70 slide to restore it to it's former glory. Paid $260 for the pistol NIB - those were the good old days!
Ok i got the slide in and its a quality slide but there is one problem. The slide is for 38 or 9mm. My. I couldnt insert and .45 barrels, so i pulled out a 9mm cartridge from my 92fs and sure enough the clearance on the breach face matched it perfect. So I am going to call Brownells tomarrow to see if this is a flute or as intended. The package as well as the PO state .45 so we will see.
Other than being the wrong caliber the slide was perfect. It has front and rear white dot sights installed. It did not come with a firing pin, FPS or extractor though.
I do however rate this slide as 100% quality as side from being the wrong caliber.
Brownells will make it right for you, no worries. ;)
OK so I call brownells to see if it was a catalog mistake or a part mistake. The guy tells me its a Colt factory mistake. He states it should have been .45.
I then ask him about the other slides in stock and he said there is only one left in stock. He said I should order this right away and request a tech to check it out. So I agree and he transfers me tothe order line. I order the part and request for them to check the breachface.
So I go 3 days without a single confirmation and my order says getting ready to ship. Yesterday i get an email from the tech that checked out the slide replacement. He states that is infact .45 acp but there is a problem. The slide appears to be used. He stated there is marks that looks like it was assembled and then the slide was racked a few times. He stated they will not have new slides instock until 6/28/07.
I reply to the email and state that I do not want a used slide for the retail price. I asked if I could get the used slide at a discounted rate.
Now I am to the point where i have shipped back the old slide. I had to pay shipping to get the wrong slide to me and now shipping back to them. I requested a refund on all shipping costs on the wrong slide but I havent hear anything since they received the wrong slide.
Not only did i pay them to ship the wrong slide to and from them, now i have to pay shipping on the backordered slide. I will give them some more time, hopefully they will make it right.

The slide I bought (about a year ago) I sent to a gunsmith for some work-I polished the flats before I sent it to him since it will have to be refinished anyway. He emails me saying it is a 38 super(I ordered a 45)I contact Brownells-they give me a reference # and tell me to ship it back for credit since they don't have one to replace it with. Outstanding customer service on Brownells part.
