I have recently developed a powerful felt need for a Colt 1911 in 9mm para caliber. So much so that I plan to hit the next Dallas gun show fully focused on finding one.

If any of you guys own one, I would be delighted to hear your opinions as to its function and reliability. I guess what I am really asking is: are springs, mags, etc readily available?

I know STI and Springfield both currently have one or more models in 9mm, but I have my heart set on a Colt.

I don't have one, but I'm sure Brownells has parts. Go and get one!

Bought a 9 mm Combat commander in late 70's. Only two FTE out of the same batch of reloads. Otherwise perfect. Will not be cheap and not easy to find. Will pay a premium over .45. I have never seen one at a gun show but they appear on the auction sites. Parts and mags seem readily available.

Mine is a great shooter and, to me, has less recoil and recovers faster. Also great to teach a child to shoot a 1911. Mine is used for home defense. One problem with a 9mm is you are going to hate to put one with a good finish in a holster. If you get a beater then no problem.

Good hunting

Bob

I have a Colt 1991A1 9mm that's very dependable and accurate. Parts are readily available at Brownells. Go find one and grab it.

These pistols are an absolute ball to shoot. Very little recoil, decent accuracy, and good reliability. Springfield makes some excellent magazines for the 9mm 1911.

I have had excellent results using 124 grain nato ball in mine. The 70 series are getting harder to find and you can expect to pay a premium in most cases. However after seeing another member of this forum pay 250.00 for a vintage .38 super, I still believe the deals are out there.

Good Hunting

I have a Colt Elite IX, a Gold Cup National Match in 9mm. For a range/target gun it is perfect. I really am not a big fan of the 9mm but I have to say I enjoy that round in the GCNM.
So far no troubles with function and accuracy is amazing. There is very little recoil and with the cost on 9mm I really don't bother reloading it.

9mm 1911s are lots of fun. Low recoil and cheap ammo make them great sub-caliber trainers. Mine is pretty darned accurate and totally reliable.

I love my 9mm commanders. If you're patient (and maybe a little lucky) you will find 'em for a decent price. They tend to be sensitive with magazines - do not go cheap - run either factory Colt or Springfield 'front ramp' magazines and you'll be all set.

I've got a blued Combat Commander manufactured in 1978 that I love to shoot. No problems to date, but I haven't put that many rounds through it. Very accurate pistol! I like the 9mm so much that I'm buying another Colt and building one to boot! Whoo! Whoo!

A joy to shoot and very accurate!! Mags are a wee bit more spendy than for .45, I've found. Good luck! :)

Just imagine how wild it gets in fishing forums.Yup, know what ya mean, gfavaron...I had to hock BOTH of my grandkids for my latest acquisition yesterday! Oh, speaking of fishing, remind me to tell you about my first bass catch--must have been about 10 lbs and 13" ...or was that 6 oz. and 5" (something like that, anyway)? I know you'll love your new pistol!

Left is a 1952 pre 70 LW .45. Right is a 1980 70 Combat 9mm. If I leave them in the dark together, do ya think they might breed and produce some little ole .380's? :D
