I recently had Springfield Custom do some work on my GI which included a Wilson extended ejector and lowering and flaring the ejection port. After my first range trip(70 - 80 rounds) since getting it back, I noticed some markings on my GI.....

I am guessing that the ejected casing is hitting as it is ejected?
Is this a problem ?

Nope. Most 1911's exhibit this contact point.

perfectly normal

Normal? You call that normal? The guy has this HUGE red arrow looking mark across the top of his slide! Can't you see it?!? And it came back from Springfield like that? Holy cow!
Oh, no. Wait. That was added to show where the real markings are. Nevermind. LOL

That's normal for most 1911's although not seen on all. What's not normal is Tom............he deviates from the standard by a large margin and I believe he's quite proud of it! ;)

Tom, I don't know what you mean. All my 1911s have a big red arrow like that. :D

Are brass ejection marks like this also normal on a Springfield GI .45 Champ?
I didn't have them before I changed the original extractor to an Ed Brown Hardcore extractor.
Thanks.

Is there a "fix" to this since it doesnt happen to some 1911s?

Blue the brass so it doesn't show up and worry you?

All of mine do it to some extent.
There is a guy at the range that puts tape on his (and his AR15 too) if it really bugs you you could do that.
I've found it generally cleans off with a little effort.

Ahhhhhh....geeze.....
It's a 1911!
Don't overanalyze it. If it works...... great. If it dont, first evaluate the extractor then the magazines.
Can a qualified individual enhance performance of ANY 1911? Well, for sure.
Gov't guns are supposed to run with 230gr ball through 7rd mags. That's not acceptable to me.
A 'properly tweaked' 1911 will function perfectly with hollowpoint ammo fed through 8rd mags.
Nice thing is we all have choices. The choices are endless! Listen to the guys that actually 'use' their guns. The local IPSC, IDPA or USPSA match is the place to learn. The winners don't win with bad equiptment. The competition shooters burn a lotta powder and know whose work 'works' and whose doesn't.
Lub
So Lubaloy, let me get that straight. What you are saying here, is that there is no 1911 from any manufacturer that will work without the proper tuning????
Gee man, that sounds like a lot of ..... No, I won't say it, even though I can't be warned. But it was the last thing I was expecting from you to hear, bad-mouthing the 1911.

Buy a Colt and have Tuner fit you up with a .268" link
Well...I guess that one falls into the same category as the allegation that I've said that high-end custom smiths are all incompetent. If memory serves me well...I don't remember ever using a .268 link in my life.
Can a qualified individual enhance performance of ANY 1911? Well, for sure.
Never claimed otherwise...but not everybody can afford or even wants that much "enhancement" and not everybody can afford to wait, with their names on a waiting list that can be anywhere from 6 months to 2 years for those enhancements. Most of'em just want their pistols to work. For the ones who can afford it and are willing to wait...it's worth it. Most of those guys do truly fine work.
It don't need to be 'custom', just per specs.
Well, ya finally got one right. If all a lad or a lady wants is a functioning pistol that can be relied on to go bang when it has to...there's no need to overstate the case. Statistically speaking, you just can't get better than 100%.
Like you said:
It's a 1911! Don't overanalyze it.
And right again. It's not a surgeon's scalpel. It's a meat cleaver. If somebody wants to make a scalpel out of it, that's fine. Pony up the bucks and got on the list of your choice.
Gov't guns are supposed to run with 230gr ball through 7rd mags. That's not acceptable to me.
Nor is it to me. The thing about it is that there are too many "Govt. Guns" out there that can't tell the difference between hardball and hollowpoints. Come see some of my old girls put that myth to bed. Say when. We'll leave the light on for ya.
Listen to the guys that actually 'use' their guns.
And is there anything that leads you to believe that hundreds and thousands of people who don't compete in the games actually use their guns? There are folks out there who run through tens of thousands of rounds a year who've never shot any of those disciplines.
Tuner's outlook is refreshing.
Refreshing indeed! If I can get a "Jamin' Jenny" to smooth out without major surgery...why do you have a problem with that? I've re-retired, Lub. I've finally shut up. Mission accomplished. It's your sandbox now. I post by invitation only. Why can't you be happy with that and leave me out of these kinds of discussions?
Peace! Out!

:scared: Say it ain't so! :scared:
Are you done casting all those bullets yet? I've heard that your house is sliding off the foundation from all the weight of the bullets that you've got stashed in the corner of your garage :D
Neah, if there is one problem that Johnny doesn't worry about, this is it. He never leaves enough ammo around to ... endanger the house. 200 rounds per session? LoRL, say about 2000 of them when you refer to Johnny.
And no, Johnny didn't re-retire. He is always among us!

I went to engineering school with a guy whose nickname was "Sigma." He was normally described as the standard deviant. :D

Say it ain't so!
Oh...it's so, Dave. I'm just sick to death of all the drama that's been stirred up because I've offered people alternatives to tossin' another 3 or 4 hundred bucks at a 500-dollar gun just to get it to work. I swear...you'd think that I'd walked into a Catholic Mass and slapped the Mother Superior. Plus...my dogs age a week for every day that I spend doin' this. They'll be gone one day, and I'll miss'em. Time to get back to'em, 'cause they miss me too. They've waited long enough. I've also got 2 acres and 3,000 square feet here to look after, and it's startin' to get a little ratty around the homestead...so I'm gonna be busy.
Are you done casting all those bullets yet?
Just came in from it. I'm done until my bud brings another half-ton of wheelweights...which should be next Friday...and I'll be at it again. I've decided to get a couple of .45-70 Sharps rifles...a Cavalry carbine and an Infantry rifle...and mould up a few hundred 405-grain gas checked pills for'em. As it stands, I've cut about 20,000 this go-round. Probably gonna be double that before mid-summer.
Anyway...I'll keep in touch with ya, David. You're a gentleman and a credit to your profession. You don't try to beat the little guy down, and it's appreciated more than you know. I hope we get to have a face-to-face one day. You say when, and I'll put the coffee on.

Gonna do a little varmint shooting with those light bullets, eh?

Thanks John. Coming from you, that means a lot. You're one of the few that knows how to think like Moe! I just wish I could get more work out. Being a one-man shop has it's drawbacks and that's one of them. Plus, my boss can be a real jerk sometimes! :p

I'm not sure which is more trouble - trying to do everything myself or being an employer. Maybe I'll just go hang out with 'tuner, play with the dogs, cast bullets and shoot those wussy .45-70 loads!
Man, can I drag a post off-topic or what!

I don't post much, love to read the threads and most of all, I love to read what the tuner says.. I think the man is very wise when it comes to the 1911. Being on the "wrong" side of 60 (is there a good side when the first number is 6?, LOL) and a veteran of an unpopular war, I do love to hear the "old dogs" relate to what's what. I guess if the tuner stops posting, I'll stop reading. I've learned more about 1911s from reading his posts than all my many thousands of rounds of shooting, and the many I own. I'd just like to sit down one day, pet the dog, and have some of that turbo coffee shoot the bull and talk collies (yes I've had and own a few) and 1911s plus some other wonderful military arms I've used down through the years (I do love my M14/M1A).
Tuner, I'll be missing you.. Don't let some of the "know it alls" run you off. You ARE too wise for that..
'nough said.
