View Full Version : Extractor Problem

I have a Pointman Major - SS that has given me problems feeding ever since I first got it. When it shoots, it shoots very well, one of the most accurate 1911's I have shot.
However, every few rounds, the cartridge does not feed into the extractor groove when it comes out of the magazine, and, when the rim of the case head gets in front of the extractor, the extractor does not flex enough to allow it to slip over the case head rim, and the slide does not go full into battery position.
I have tried taking some stock off the back of the extractor with a wet-stone, and that seemed to have helped, but didn't totally fix the problem. Do I need to remove more stock? Any other suggestions?
Thank you.

Get with the folks at DW. www.danwessonfirearms.com (http://www.danwessonfirearms.com) They bend over backwards for you. Call Ginny and work out the details. Also the www.m1911.org (http://www.m1911.org) site has info on how to adjust the extractor.

Good advice Stumbler, but the Wesson has an external extractor...........not much can be done with those. Will have to contact the factory if replacement parts are needed. The hook of the extractor can be adjusted, but tension........uh, don't think anything can be done other than replacing the spring.

Old Timer's struck again. Some of the earlier DW's had the internal extractor (my Pointman does, but it is a mixing of experimental parts)
Thanks for the catch Wichaka

Just an FYI only the Patriot series has the external extractor all others have an internal extractor. Either way shoots4fun contact Dan Wesson they will hook you up (pun intended).

Yes, my Pointman has the internal extractor. I have checked out the portion of the site that Stumbler recommended, regarding forming/fitting the extractor. I know they can be challenging to fit properly, but I want to give it a try before I send it back to DW, or get a gunsmith to look at it.
Thanks for all your inputs.

S4F Just a guess but it sounds to me like your extractor maybe a
bit too tight. Make sure that when you take out the extractor that you clean
the channel out good. You will also have the firing pin out at the same time,
you will want to clean that channel also.

Some polishing on the extractor critical areas could help as well, use a Dremel, but with the rubber polishing disk only.

I have tried polishing some of the surfaces of the extractor with a whetstone (Sp?). And I have adjusted the tension. I haven't shot the gun extensively, yet, however, the polishing/adjusting that I have done so far seem to have fixed the problem.
I usually don't shoot when I am teaching classes, but I don't have any classes scheduled for the next couple of weekends, so, hopefully, I can get out and put a couple of hundred rounds through the gun to see how it functions.
Thanks for the inputs.
