Hey all, I searched and didnt come up with anything. I have a 37 year old combat commander in electroless nickle. If left for about a week without a quick wipedown it develops a green scum. This comes off with just a quick wipe and doesnt seem to corrode anything. It happens with CLP and Hoppes cleaner. Also with just oil.
Please tell me what this is and how to get rid of it. The only thing I can think of is the cleaners and lube.
[Sry cleaned it before I took pictures]

Don't use Hoppes on it. Some things will attack the plating. Just wipe it off clean, don't use anything and see what that does.
The green may be corrosion from the iron that's in the nickle plating.

Hoppes! :scared: Hoppes will discolor nickel. I learned this by turning one of my nickel pistols sort of yellow. I guess Hoppes eats the nickel plate slowly and exposes the copper underneath.

Use Flitz on the Nickel plate.

One of the things I learned here is not to use Hoppes on nickel and to use Flitz instead. BTW, welcome to the forum. There is so much to learn here and the members will share their knowledge with you.

I just used Nevr-dull wadding compound, by Eagle One, on my nickel plated Trooper yesterday to clean it . Followed by oiling and wiping it down, it worked wonders. I've also used Mother's Mag and aluminum polish with good results, but it takes more elbow grease. Good luck! :)

The green scum may occur from prolonged contact with damp leather, or just oxidation by the passage of time unprotected. I found that Blue Magic (which is non abrasive) works wonders on bare metal surfaces and high gloss finishes. It also impedes oxidation. It is available at Auto Supply Stores,

I'm not an expert, however I believe there is a layer of copper under that nickle which may be the cause of the green stuff if the nickle has some breaks in it.

This is my "Satin Nickel" Government (1979) and the color in this photo is very close to what you see in real life.

I use mpro 7 cleaner to clean my satin nickel (1976) combat commander. Also use Mpro 7 oil to wipe down. Gun Butter inside. Never saw any green stuff.
