I shot my cold ss series 80 I posted about the rust a week back, it is poa, I have only had one other colt that shot this good, I can hit at 20 yds, what I aim at. It is as on the money as my s&w 4506 with adj, sights.
I am not sure on the rust on the gun it self, it was brown, but def. rust on the mag. the mag. is marked S for stainless? I thought this was what it is for. maybe it is not a stainless mag, it is not blue, and looks to be SS.
It had two pin dots of definet rust.
I bought some rigs grease and went through all my guns and wiped a nice coat on them. the grease seems to coat the gun and stay on the surface. I have no problem with wd but it does not stay where you put it and does evaporate after a time..
I really like this colt.
I have 4 a comander lw, 1911 made in 1918, a rem, rand, and this series 80 ss.
I love them all but the rand is my fav. I just love the history of a typwriter company making war emplements during ww2. Brings home the desperation of the times.

Jim,
While stainless steel is "rust resistant", it definitely is not rust proof. Stainless guns need to be protected as much as their blued counterparts.
WD40 is not intended to be used as a protective layer on guns. Oils and greases specifically for the lubrication and protection of guns are available from many sources, and should be used instead of WD40.

Congratulations on a pistol that shoots to point-of-aim!

I recently read an article in the GCA (Garand Collectors Association) publication in which a museum (Springfield I belive it was) curator recommended Birchwood Casey Barricade (FKA Sheath) for protection from corrosion.

I had already discovered this stuff and love it.

Although my safe does have a dehumidifier in it, it is also in a non-climate controlled room, so I keep stuff covered in this stuff. I have several blued firearms in there and they stay rust free.

(Oh and yes, the "S" does denote stainless)

FWIW

Shooters Choice makes a spray on product named
"Rust Prevent" that works well.

I am glad you are pleased with your Colt. I like to use CLP for lubrication and rust preventive.

Jim,
WD40 is not intended to be used as a protective layer on guns. Oils and greases specifically for the lubrication and protection of guns are available from many sources, and should be used instead of WD40.

Also, WD40 is a penetrating oil, it can penetrate the seal around the cartridge primer and cause a failure to fire.

I don't won't to sound rude, But WD-40 is about the worst thing you could use on a firearm. Period ,dot ,dash. Get some CLP or hoppes elite gun oil.... :)
