I am a new (month old) owner of a Taurus pt1911 and have put over 500 rounds through it. I field strip and clean after every range visit and am slowly working on the right ways to detail strip. I am currently working on learning to remove the extractor. I can put the firing pin and spring just fine, but I haven't figured out the necessary part dance to get the firing pin plunger or extractor out. Any Suggestions? My impressions of the PT1911 will be added in a separate message.

This is only my 2nd 1911, so I'm new as well. I found that detail stripping the 1911 was pretty simple. I just look at the parts list from my manual and can figure out how to put it back together. Taking it apart is simple...putting it back together can be tricky.

Here is a good link to have from the forum.

Does that pistol come with a firing pin safety? With the slide off the pistol, look at the underside of the slide, near the area where the disconnector notch is. If you see a small shiny round part there, then you have a firing pin safety. The way to proceed is first to press that part up and then press in the firing pin enough to clear the firing pin stop. Release the ... shiny part at the bottom of the slide and the firing pin will stay in. Remove the firing pin stop and now you can press that button again to release the firing pin. Pull it out. Then pull out the shiny thing, it should drop off. And finally you can remove the extractor.

Firing pins get out just fine. I have tried moving the ejector to help with dropping the stop. If it is supposed to fall out easily, it does not as of yet. I am going to try and pull the firing pin stop out lightly with a needle nose. Thanks for the help.

Once I pushed the firing pin saftey in and then the firing pin throught the firing pin stop I could slide the the FPS down and everything comes right apart. Be careful as there are little springs and parts that can go flying off somewhere.

Success! If you let the extractor hold the plunger in, when you release it, The plunger will be pushed further out and can be grasped with the fingers. I agree about the small spring. If it fell on the ground I would have lost it.

Thanks for the help.

Went to the range today and after shooting, the range's 1911 expert showed me how to detail strip the lower. The parts were tighter fitted than he expected. He had a lot of work to get the main spring case loose. Series 80 definitely takes some getting used to.

I have added pictures of my pistol in both the Taurus Gun Porn Section and in its own thread. Thanks for the help.
