View Full Version : Thinking about picking up a pony.
I saw a buddy of mine at my local FFL's today and he wants to sell me his XSE Series 80 Commander with 6 McCormick mags for $650. He said the firing pin stop shot out of the gun when he was firing it and it has a takedown scratch on the frame. He put the FP stop back in and it seems to be working ok, although I suspect the FP stop might be out of spec which is easily fixed. What do you guys think? Sound like a good deal? This would be my first Colt.

First of all, the firing pin stop will not fire out of the gun. The FPS is held by the extractor and slide. $650 for an XSE is a decent price. I just wish the 'idiot mark' wasn't there.

Price doesn't sound bad...and I also don't understand the FP stop falling out. Which XSE is this, by the way? If it's the all stainless model, you might can work on the scratch. If it's the lightweight, that teflon coating is another story! Be sure to post pictures when you get it home. :)

If it's the lightweight in .45 ACP, better check to feed ramp and see how bad those McCormicks have chewed it up...

It's not a bad price at all and FPS are relatively cheap.

The firing pin stop can fall out of the gun, if it is a loose fit. And it's not held in place by the extractor, it's held in place by the firing pin itself.
If this thing has really happened with this pistol, I would change every spring in it the moment I get it in my hands.

I'm going to disagree with everyone on here. I think the asking price is high. For a little more money you can get a new one from Buds....Pass! :o

And I guess the extra mags account for something. Maybe just a tad high given it's condition, but still not a real bad price for an XSE if it's not just totally shot out!

I'm not convinced. I did an admittedly short test, and didn't see any damage to my (aluminum) frame, which, in any case, would appear below the feed ramp. I'm probably in the minority, but I'd knock $100 off for the scratch, unless it could be easily removed.
I think I am probably going to pass. I dont want to inherit somebody's problem gun. And If I do have to replace FPS plus all the springs it does not sound like the greatest deal. Also, a series 70 would be more desirable.

Do you have an URL for "Bud's"?

Looks like they have a series 70 in either SS or Blue!

Thnx for the link Jeff, though they do not have a commander without the firing pin safety. If I am correct M1991 have a series 80 system.

You are correct, But you can easily remove them and replace it with a plug available from Brownell's. Personally I don't have any issues with the series 80 firing system..... :)

One's first Colt should be a special experience. I remember, a little dinner, wine, soft music, sitting on the sofa later and opening the box....... Pass on this one and go for a better one.
Assuming there is a possibility to talk him down a ways what is a reasonable price point? I just bought a $1400 STI that is going to have further customization work...

I'd buy a "standard" blued commander and have the "O" package installed on it. But that's what i'd do now, what I did do actually is buy as many Colts as I could and enjoy all the different models and looks.

To the first post. Too much unless a gunsmith checks it over. Agree on a gunsmith and then $650 with the mags is O.K. plus what it would take to fix it.
