Are there any online stores that you would reccomend for a new colt? Not too interested in gunbroker (it just plain scares me for some reason) but an actual store with some decent pricing on one?

Don't know what part of the country you're in, pat86323, but there are quite a few here in Texas at the local gun shows. If there any shows in your area, you might try them as an alternative to the online sellers. Good luck!

Pretty much every gun shop gets guns through the major distributors, and Colt sells through the distributors. Not every shop can afford to keep in stock every model by every manufacturer, but any gun shop can order you any Colt through his distributors. If he tells you he can't, he's not being honest with you.
What his price will be may not be what you want to pay, but the fact is a good shop should be willing to work with you, because he won't have to pay out of his own pocket to keep that Colt in his display case for three months before someone buys it. Some dealers seem to feel that you should pay a premium for the Colt because you're NOT buying the other brand they stock, so they are losing a sale on that pistol. IMHO that's a stupid approach, because if you want a Colt, and if you don't get it from the local guy you're going to buy the Colt on-line rather than the local guy's Brand X or Brand Y ... he's only hurting himself if he won't order you the Colt for a minimum fair mark-up.
Unfortunately, some gun shops seem to enjoy hurting themselves ...

Well I would inform them they have loast a sale and try some of the links.
I have had that same trouble with gun store commandos trying to talk me out of a Colt for whatever. I have made it a point to help them understand I want what I want and nothing else. Most have given up trying to convince me other wise.
If it is your money than you should get what you want.
Good for you sticking to your guns. I believe you made a good decision on the Colt, let us know what you come up with.

I understand that may come as a surprise to many of you here that I am a shade opinionated. I reckon it is because I exercise such restraint here. :D
Feel bad for the young upstarts who knows better than I do try to sell me a Kimber.

Opinionated? Thats an understatement. :scared: If your local dealers don't want to carry Colt's, And you don't want to buy off line. You might need to travel to other stores in your state in your quest to find Colts. I travel all over my state looking for Colts. And I have been real lucky in my searches....... ;)

Pat,
It might be helpful to say what area you are in (although I suspect it might be AZ or thereabouts :D) someone may know of a shop not too far from you who carries or will get you one for a fair markup.
Failing that I second the budsgunshop.com recommendation. Good folks with good service.

Great post Hawkmoon, you have just described both of the toy stores in my town. If it doesn't say Kimber or Glock they most likely will not have any or many and will tell you some fairy tale about either hard to get, going out of business, or poor quality. They seem to be more focused on brain washing the locals than selection of alternatives - due to profit margin. They also seem to be pretty successful if random surveys at the local range are any indication. Kimber and Glock must be so proud.

Along with Bud's Gun Shop, I have to throw a good shout out for Sniper Country PX - out of PA. They have Colt's on hand and sell 'em at really fair prices. They've done right by me!

Well, a gun shop is in business to make money. I understand that. And because of my years of playing with cars, I also understand about what's called the "floor plan" -- that's the money a dealer spends to keep cars (or guns) in stock for a customer to look at. Cars or guns, the dealer (and the bank) have to pay for those stock items so the tire kickers will have some tires to kick. Just as a car dealer will tend to stock cars with the more expensive options so they can make back some of that "floor plan" money when they sell a car, the gun dealer who stocks Kimber or Glock will try to move you into what he has on hand for two reasons: (1) he reduces his inventory, and (2) he probably has a higher margin on those pistols. I don't hold it against a dealer if he asks if I'd be interested in a ___ instead of what I came in looking for.
Where I get upset is that they don't seem bright enough to recognize a serious buyer who knows what he wants from a "tire kicker." If I walk in and ask for the price on a Colt model XYZ, and I say "Thank you, I'm not interested in the Glock, what's your best price on the Colt," at that point an intelligent person would stop trying to sell the Glock and see what kind of a deal they can cut me on what I want to buy. I have NEVER bought an automobile off the lot. My cars are always special order, my dealer knows that, and I don't get any static. They make a profit on the cars I buy, and someone else always buys the ones on the lot.
Why should it be any different in a gun shop? The dealer shouldn't act insulted when a buyer knows what he wants, nor should he look at it as an opportunity to gouge the buyer. All that accomplishes today is to drive the buyer to an out-of-town dealer or the Internet. So he doesn't get to move his inventory. Big deal. A sale is a sale. Anytime you can make a $50 to $100 profit for the effort of picking up the phone, it's a good deal. I don't understand why some shops will turn away buyers who know what they want. It simply doesn't make sense.

We don't call you Bonehead for nothing. ;)

I got the run around from a Kimber "Master Dealer." Apparently they function like Harley Davidson? The master dealer is basically the distributer for the area, if I am understanding correctly? At least that's what the owner of the shop told me. This was a few years back and I wanted a Colt, he told me to buy one of his Kimbers instead and once I saw the difference I would never go back. He was right, I never went back to his shop again.
Your local store can get a Colt for you through this distributor:

There is the shop till you drop concept my wife has. Also be positive and nice. Smile while you listen to them and after you fingerprint and slobber on all the Glocks and Kimbers tell them to call you if they get a Colt in trade as you want a Gold Cup just like your grandfather carried in WWI. Worked for a friend of mine. The shop acutally called him (O.K., it was a Commander not a Gold Cup but he got a good deal).

Just bought a L/w Commander from Ozark Guns off internet for 825 + 25 insured shipping. Cheapest I had seen previously was 899 at Buds. I haven't received it yet probably tues or wed since I didn't pay by credit card but mailed cashiers check. (Hate to see him lose 3% to credit card company)

Just an aside, but Bud's price is $789, not $899. I would be severely tempted to order, but it's in .38 Super and I want one in .45. AJCsportshop.com has them for $785, but I'm a bit apprehensive of purchasing a new Colt sight unseen. The next gun show is June 9th, I'll be there looking for one.

Davidsons shows 4 O4860XSE Lightweight Commander 45 ACP in stock, which probably means Buds wouldn't have any trouble getting you one if you call them.
Be advised however that Buds has had the 4540XSE Super 38's in continuous stock since around November which means that they could have cost him less than a new one would. It is my understanding that 2007 dealer cost on an XSE is a bit over 800.00
My Super 38 LTW Commander came from Bud's and I got very good service and quick shipping on it. It was absolutely new in the box in perfect condition.
If you don't have one, you really should try a Super 38... I enjoy mine a lot.

I just went to Bud's Site and he doesn't have them in stock. Last week he had one. I think maybe we're talking different models because 2 shops here had the same price 899. Bud's is just down the road from me. I'm talking LW Commander in 45
