View Full Version : Slide locking w/ one-piece guide rod...

I've purchased a Wilson one piece guide rod and Wilson 18 lb spring for my 1911.

With the mag out I can pull the slide back and it stays put. (the slide stop is not getting in the way)

If I take the guide rod out and put the plug back in, with the Wilson 18lb spring, she works fine.

Any pointers?

The slide stays at the back without the slide release lever being pushed up? Then there is some binding, probably caused by the recoil spring cap. Try to feel if there is any area on the guide rod where the cap can be caught and stop the slide from moving forward.

Another reason might be that the spring is binding somewhere, although I do not think this is possible. Check the cap/rod for binding.

Tried that...

The guide rod is in perfect shape too. Not a scratch on her. I thought the cap might be binding on the spring, but that is doesn't have a mark on it.

Is it possible that the guide rod is getting too much of an angle to it, for the plug?

The sad part is that the slightest touch will send the slide forward.

I do not think so. If the rear edge of the rod is resting properly on the recess in the frame, I do not think there is any chance of a wrong angle. Does the rod have a hole, to insert a paper clip in it, so that you can then remove it? If yes, maybe the edges of the hole are a bit rough and the cap is a tight fit?

Oh, one more thing, are you sure you didn't insert the spring the wrong way? The open threads go towards the front. I am sure you knew that, but sometimes ...

Nah... the one peice guide rod (opgr) is retained by a Wilson supplied plug, you've got to take her out with a bushing wrench. (no holes)

:D Yep spring is in correctly :D

I am not sure what to say. Maybe the plug is too tight and causes the rod to bind? Where is Tuner, when we need him?

Why would anyone remove the standard recoil system and install a full length recoil spring guide unless they're trying to make the pistol heavier (for some reason)? :p These serve no other function.

"Why would anyone remove
the standard recoil system" ---Chuck

You know... it has worked for the past 94 years and is up to F.B.I. and U.S.M.C. spec.

Ah, to hell with this thread, I'm staying with the stock plug and Wilson 18lb spring.
