Lightweight Commanders w/Spur Hammers

I was sleepily reading through some old posts tonight and came upon one who asked if Light Weight Colt Commanders were ever produced with spur hammers. The consensus of opinion appeared to be "no." Sorry to burst that bubble, but mine (26120-LW) came from the factory with a spur hammer. I believe it was manufactured in 1973. I get the distinct impression that with 1911's it is probably safest to never say never.

OD, the gun has an odd history. It was one of a matched pair of commanders purchased by a now deceased relative who was elected to a term as sheriff of an East Texas county in the 70's. He wore them for ceremonial occasions in a tooled leather two gun gun belt. I doubt they were ever fired much since he was a politician, not a law enforcement professional, and I am virtually certain that they were unmodified from original. A cousin has the mate, and the gun belt has been lost. My gun is now my frequent carry weapon and HAS been much modified (by me) with modern sights, high rise safety, etc. Among the parts removed was the original spur hammer which made a permanent impression not only my memory, but on my shooting hand. I might be able to persuade my cousin to photograph the mate which i assume has been unmodified, but the best I could personally do is take a picture of the old meat eating hammer as I saved it with the rest of the old parts. Upon reflection, I suppose it is remotely possible that the sheriff replaced the commander hammers with spur hammers but if so, that is just about the strangest modification I can imagine.

Ok. I fold my hand! I guess there is no limit to the way folks personalize these things. I certainly rebuilt mine the way I thought it ought to be.

Mark, suggest that after the 4000 piece run for the WW1 reissue pistols is completed, Colt's should move ahead post-haste with the Barbie & Ken signature edition matched pairs, with Combat Commanders for the Ken doll (er, pistol) and Defenders for Barbie.
