While attempting to change grips on a 1991A1 I purchased used, I managed to back the grip screw bushing out of the frame. The grip screw and bushing appear to be a permanently stuck in the rubber grips I was replacing.
How difficult will it be for me to replace the bushing in the frame? I will have to purchase a new bushing and screw, since I managed to severely bugger-up the bushing and screw while trying to seperate them. Should I attempt to replace the bushing myself, or see if my local gunsmith will have mercy on me?

I have had success with "flat" pliers (those without teeth). You can put the bushing back in (if the threads are not messed up). I would recommend either staking or using loctite on the bushing to stop this from happening again.
Good luck

I would personally opt for loctite as opposed to staking. Loctite is 'nondestructive" and works well. It's also easier. Brownells sells a magna tip bit specifically for grip bushings. I've never seen one up-close, but I've been curious about them and it might be worth checking out...

What others said. If the threads are not damaged, put it back on, and secure it with red Loctite. If they are damaged, get a new set and put the missing one on with Loctite.
As for the screwdriver for the bushings, it is lick a socket wrench, it fits around the bushing and has a protruding blade inside, which fits the slot. If you are a gunsmith, it sure is a worthy addition to your toolset. But in all my years dealing with 1911, I've managed to remove the bushing once, so....
