View Full Version : Looking for new Grips

So I've decided to get rid of the plain plastic grips that came on my Springfield 1911 mil-spec, and buy some new grips. I decided that i dont want rubber or wood, so that leaves open the catagory which includes all the more innovative designs using metal, micarta and such.
I've looked at the alumargips and quite a few others in the grips section of the other m-1911.org page, but im concerned about durability and the checkering. Some of them have quite unique checkering, if it even could be considered checkering and I dont want to go off, buy a pair and realize they feel terrible in my hands.
Any suggestions??

I have pewter grips on mine, and they seem to work fine, and I get a lot of questions and comments about them. They weren't terribly expensive. I just did an eBay search, and found a lot of different designs in a lot of different materials.

:D i have a series 80 Colt in stainless that came with Hogue wrap arounds. I didn't like the look or feel of the black rubber in my palm, but did like the finger grips they provided.
I went to http://www.ajaxgrips.com/ and got a pair of ivory polymer with gold Colt medallions ($30.00) and a Colt 1911 modular($9.95). Looks good, feels great. I did the same with my Colt Deffender.

I just got a set of slim Alumagrips for my Kimber Ultra Carry and they are awesome. High quality and good service also.

If you like wood grips, check out CollinsCraft. Just got a pair in Australian Lacewood. They are great, really nice on a blued gun.

It would be extremely nice if you could provide a web site for them.

I was at the range this past weekend, and i tried out a pair of rubber wrap-around grips. They weren't Hogue, but looked identical, the packaging said they were made by Target Sporting goods. Anywho I decided I liked them and bought them. I was leaning towards getting a pair of Alumagrips in black, but I was unsure if they would hold up to scratching. For now these rubber grips will do though.
Thanks for all your advice

If you do not use to throw your pistol around, as if it was your 5$ Wallmart hammer, they'll hold up just fine. At least, my black ones hold fine for 6 months I had them on my pistol.

Sort of like my checkered walnut grips. Have tried rubber, but do not like them. Besides I paid the extra for good checkering front & back of my grip & that is when one does not need anything else for with said checkering & grips as I have the gun is snug in the hand.

Geez, I can't imagine why nobody's mentioned Gunner Grips (http://www.simonichknives.com/gunner.htm) yet?
They're made of that G-10 epoxy composite stuff that knife handles are made from. It's as close to indestructible as you can get, and the "golf-ball" pattern checkering on them is very grippy without being so sharp that it cuts or abrades your hands. I have a set on every 1911 I own.

I just got a set of 1911 grips in Birdseye Maple from gungripguys.com and they're really nice. They're a small outfit (I Think) with lower prices. They're so nice I think I'll order a set for my Star BM.
I remember finding a site which had some beautiful (But Expensive) Mastodon Grips and forgot to add the site to my favorites. Naturally I can't find iit again. This one I put in favorites.

Have to admit that those Gunner Grips look like a good change. Reminds me a bit of stippling rather then checkering. Please do not take this as an insult for I have one Full House PPC revolver of where the backstrap is nicely stippled & really do like it.

I like the VZ Grips. I put pair on Wilson Combat CQB, like the feel and they don't look bad.

I like the G10 grips as well, but went with the Larry Davidson Lizard grips instead of the Gunners.

I like the Davidson ones too. Nice sculpturing (I need to spell-check that) and nice colors.
