I have the chance to buy a 1970 colt commander in good condition, the bore is considered mint. Is $1100 to much? Also would this be a good gun to have custom work done to? Its blued and all original now with box and papers.

Thanks :)

Heligood, you could get a new (2005) Colt Commander with warranty for less than $1100. Or at that price, a new semi-custom pistol with warranty.
Some people pay more for older stuff though, as collectors or whatever, which is cool if everyone is satisfied. Are you looking at this as a collector?

Way too high for a shooter. At the extreme top end for a collector piece.

Im looking for a carry gun and a shooter, Ive had my fill of kimbers and probably won't own another one. I have been thinking of either buying just a basic commander size colt and having custom work done to it as the years roll on...I have heard the newer colts have had some problems and have also read that the older ones are tough as nails. My other option is to just buy a custom gun, my friend is trying to talk me into a nighthawk enforcerII any one ever heard of it? here is a link http://www.nighthawkcustom.com/enforcer2.htm

Heligood:

If your looking for a carry piece, that'd be a great gun, but you're paying quite a bit for the "collector" value. I just dropped a grand for an early NIB 9mm Combat Commander, so I can empathize.

The best thing about an early Colt Commander is the parts. Most of the new 4-4.25" guns use bull barrel's, proprietary "safety" components and extractors, etc. With an original Commander, you're set for any mods you want to make.

Chopping it up (sights, etc) will reduce the value, but if you're going to keep it, carry it and shoot it, so what? :)

Don't know whether or not you're interested in this, but it's relevant to thread: Colt is making new copies of the series 70 now, that are supposed to be identical inside and out to one made in 1970 or earlier- except that you could now also get that 70 Commander in stainless (or carbon steel blued). I have one in government model size. Forum Member Dana wrote an article about the newer series 70 pistols, which is here: http://www.m1911.org/full_prodtest.htm

Also: I shoot sometimes with a dude who has one he says he bought his Colt Commander the early 1970's, and another dude who bought one just like it more recently. It's all good in reliability from what they say and I've seen.

Not necessarily true, the new Colts seem to be pretty good and have fewer MIM parts than Kimbers.
