I've recently completed a rebuild of my Springfield Mil-Spec. I've decided that I'd like to build a two-tone 1911 from scratch. (Probably Caspian frame & Slide) It'll be of the stainless steel slide with a black frame configuration. What is the best-looking and most durable black coating that can be applied to stainless steel? Thanks!

I think the most durable coating you can get is Moly Resin from John Norrell. It requires a one hour cure at 300F but once that is done you'll need a sandblaster to remove it. From anything I've read it outperforms Duracoat, KG Gunkote, and all the rest, but the trade-off is that it is the hardest to apply because of the 300F oven cure. You CAN do it at home in your home oven, but it may smell up the house for a bit.
That's the finish I'm going to use on my Sistema, except I'm going with OD Green and black. I'll call it the "vintage warrior" look, as I figure it will go nicely with my M1 Garand. ;)

the ceramic "ceranite" coatings are supposedly much harder than the moly resins or polymers.
