I have this, ugh...ugh...Double Eagle in 10mm. There, I said it. When you guys get through with the snickering, I have a question. The head space is a little much. I have a Barsto barrel that I would like to install in this pistol.

The lugs measure out to: Barrel 1-.0000 Slide 1-.0000
2-.3265 2-.3240
3-.6535 3-.6490

My math says I have to take .0035 from the first barrel lug (to have 1 and 3 touch) and .0010 from the second (.0035 minus .0025) to have all three lugs in contact. I have plenty of hood to play with. Sound right or to much to remove from the lugs on 10mm?

There was a 10mm Double Eagle, with adjustable sights, in a shop I frequent. It sat in the display case for ten years, with the price varying between $700-$800. I told myself I'd buy it when the price came down closer to $500, but it suddenly disappeared. I don't regret not buying it for $700, but it might have been sort of a cool companion to a Delta Elite. Removing ~.003" from the lugs seems like very minimal fitting; I think the army was counting on "fitting" the barrel to slide via proof rounds distorting the lugs that much, back in the day.

I have plenty of hood to play with.

The question is...How much headspace do you have to play with? How much barrel to slide endshake do you have? Both will increase by the amount of lug removal.

Assuming that your measurements are correct, I'd take .002 off the first lug...the rearmost one...to pick up #2 and let firing take care of #3. it will either come in, or it won't.

That head space is what's got me worried, Tuner. You can see that ramp job in the second photo and the amount of unsupported brass in the first. Well, I think you can. The photos are not the best and I don't yet know if they posted. I don't have any way to accurately measure head space. I have go/no go gauges, but my understanding is that they will only tell you if ammo that meets sammi specs and will be fired in an in spec firearm is safe to use. This situation just doesn't look right. I'm wondering what would happen with something like Double Tap. Anyways, Tuner, I got to get down your way pretty soon. I really enjoyed that visit.

Wait a sec! Is the second picture showing how far in the chamber the cartridge will go??? It looks as if the cartridge rim is further back than the barrel's hood, by a lot. Or is this a picture issue?

It's a picture issue, John. I was trying to show the rear of the chamber and the amount of material that has been, in my opinion, removed to relocate the barrel ramp further foward due to feeding issues. I can't get good close ups.

Goin' by the amount of barrel ramp "work"...and because it's a 10mm...I think I'd leave it alone. You can't afford to lose any more case head support.

That's the original barrel, Tuner. I bought that gun supposedly new in the box at a gun show. The "expert" I had with me was of the opinion it had probably only been test fired at the factory. He had also apparently "invented" a fully automatic 1911 whilst doing a trigger job. One other problem that could develop is the barrel ramp on the Barsto hanging over the frame ramp, since the original looks about right. Could be why the original ramp was moved foward. Guess I better check out a few more things.
