This is different than the typical half cock question and I couldn't find an answer by searching. I was function testing an older Colt Series 70 GM at a shop and one time when I dry fired it, the hammer fell and stopped at the half cock notch. This particular gun had an aftermarket trigger with an overtravel screw and I was wondering if it is possibly related to the overtravel screw being adjusted too far in? I am guessing the hammer would only stop at the half cock if the sear wasn't released far enough.

I would put money on the overtravel screw being the culprit.

Yeap, what Anthony said. Back of that screw a turn or so and check again.
