View Full Version : Gap in busing fit to slide - is this bad?

I received a new barrel bushing from SIG to replace a bad one
Here is the current fit - question
Is this gap a problem to the pistol - can it damage the slide or the bushing or the barrel?

Yet another splendid example of modern manufacturing technology at work!
As long as the bushing's fit inside the slide isn't too sloppy (allowing the recoil spring plug to tilt the bushing in the slide) don't see the gap causing any mechanical problems. But, make sure the barrel doesn't bind in the bushing anywhere from battery to link-down.
One way to fix this bushing is silver solder a shim on the forward side of the locking tab that's as thick as the gap is wide. Another way is to send it back to SIG for one that fits the gun, describing its problem. Hoping all the while they won't send you one just like this one - or worse! Regards

You got good advice, and yes, it's probably OK if you check it as advised. But if it's a defenseive weapon I'd still get it fixed. Sig is good about stuff like that and they often pay for shipping both ways. (They have a way of emailing you a shipping label) Anyway, I'd call Sig and see what they say. I would advise sending the gun back so they can properly fit the bushing, rather than guessing at sending out one that may or may not be a proper fit.
I had a problem with a 239. I called and explained my background (real familiar w/Sig as my former agency used a lot of them) and they just sent me the parts for me to install with no threats of a voided warranty. The parts they sent me were also bad in my opinion, and as I didn't want to start fitting parts on a warrantied gun I called them up and they took the gun back for repair. Paid freight both ways. Gun came back 100% reliable.
Out of hundreds of Sigs I've issued, I have seen a few bad out of the box. I have never seen one fail to come back from the factory @100% functionality. And once fixed, Sigs stay fixed.
Out of over 500,000 rounds downrange that I have personally supervised, I have seen the front sight come off of one 228 and one stovepipe. Once Sig fixes their guns, they stay fixed.
And no, I don't work for or have any association with Sig. I did however carry one for 20 some years, much of that in Detroit, so I learned to trust it pretty well.

As long as you got fit to the barrel and slide with it, you're ok.

Thanks everyone - the bushing lock up to the barrel is tight but not binding - the lock up to the slide is tight but I can move it with the hand but tight.
The pistol is very accurate with the bushing.

Then unless it really bothers you i wouldn't fool with it
Or Down the Road change it thats what i would end up doing with a egw

What was wrong with the BAD one, and did it fit the same?

The BAD was not machined true round ID and had casting marks and was ruff in the ID.
The fit was flush to the slide.

Do you still have that bad bushing ,and if so do you have a way to check the over all length of it compared to the new one?

Yes I do have the old bushing. That is a great Idea. If it is longer than they may have sent me the wrong one or another mis machined bushing is that what you are suggesting?

I would return it. Just plain is not right. Looks like another mis machined part to me.
Seems like it would function fine, I just have a thing about the looks of a firearm. No sangs no gaps. Murphy is lurking out there. :)

I tried the old bushing and another from my STX and all three gap to the slide. I think it is a bad cut on the SLIDE! - the bushing slide groves seem to be cut to close to the muzzle end of the slide.

I think I will send Victoria in Sig Service and email with the picture attached and see what they want to do.

There was mention of the old bushing not being "true round". Uh, excuse me, but the bushing in any semi-auto with a tipping barrel design does not call for a circular opening, but one that is relieved to allow the barrel to move through its vertical arc without binding. Perhaps a photo of the old bushing would explain more....

Here is a picture of the old bushing. You can see the poor machine marking on the ID
