View Full Version : External Extractor Fit Question

I am working on a sig GSR, which has an external extractor. There seems to be interference with the extractor of the round right as it hits the frame ramp and straightens up into the chamber. Im getting an unacceptable amount of bullet setback. Ive addressed a feeding problem, and Ive checked the frame ramp angle and barrel throat; its all good. The breechface is also all within specs and lightly polished.

Ive noticed the extractor engages the case notch forward of the rim, and the extractor slot aft of the hook never touches the rim.
I know the proper fit for a normal internal extractor is for the case rim to ride along the channel. I am hesitiant to dress it down because the difference in tensioning between the two different extractor types, namely that the ext. extractor relies on a spring, and because the hook on the external one applies its force to a cartridge around a different axis.

I did the usual radiusing and smoothing out of the extractor and Im still getting a good amount of setback (.06-.10" shortening of o.a.l.)

I also have a smith and wesson 1911 (which has been flawless for 15k+ rounds) and it too touches the case via the hook, with the case rim not hitting anything, which leads me to believe thats the norm for this 1911 "improvement".

So, my question, to those in the know, is this proper and correct? or should the ext. extractor be engaging the case rim?

Also, is there ever a certain amount of bullet setback that is deemed acceptable and normal?

My next move, unless someone suggests differently, is to polish and further dehorn the extractor hook, only reducing the dimensions of it by .001-.002" and reassembling and checking function. Then repeat possibly.
thanks much.

The external extractor should tension off the tip of the hook and not off the pad behind the hook. The pad should not engage the rim.
You may need to radius the front edge of the hook so it don't hit too far forward on the case.
