Hi
Yikes !!!!
A reasonable price on generic wood grips is around $10 brand new. Hogue sells off "seconds" for $12 to $20 in an enormous variety of styles.
I'd leave the Colt's as is and get something that you don't have to mess with. You can probably sell the Colts for what a set of Hogue seconds will cost you. They are worth "something" with the medallion, and very little without it.

If you know what size the medallions are, you might be able to replace them with something else, like a gold coin. Might make an interesting set of grips.

Hi
If you do decide to fill it, a chunk of Jade or something similar would be very cool.

yes you could fill with wood putty, sand and refinish.
But why?
You'll never match the wood putty exact and there will be a noticable round dot of filler.
Personally, if I were going to remove the medallion, I'd replace it with something decorative like the fellows mentioned above

i have often fiitted grips from one gun to another and sometime i would have a gun with another makers medallions on the grips... a simple and inexspensive fix that is easy and looks REALLY nice is to fill the medallion hole with either mother of pearl or ivory.... the local hobby lobby has all kinds
of small bits and pieces for people who do crats ..little bag of mother of pearl
pieces cost me about 7 bucks and i just made a couple little round "buttons" and used jewlers glue to fix them in place.. i also used some small "buttons" of ivory that i got off of ebay that was sold as a bag of "leftovers" little odd shaped pieces from someone elses projects..
