I have a SA 1911A1 - GI-MilSpec. Does anyone know just what parts are MIM produced? Should I be concerned? The Kimber site seems proud on the fact that there are many MIM parts in their products. I assume from other posts in this forum that they are inferior to solid steel. I generally know the process but the casting varies in quality from manufacturer to manufacturer. Just who does the MIM parts for Springfield or is it "in house"? Many questions and any answers will be much appreciated?

I bought a USGI from springfield. The thumb safety broke off clean at the plate part from the pin while trying to remove it with little or no force. The problem with MIM is having no way of knowing whether it is a good batch or bad. For reliability sake, I would (just me) change out the safety, sear, disconnector, hammer, and extractor, Especially the extractor in the springfield...
that needs to be barstock steel for proper tension.
Just my opinion

$.02 - I would not worry too much. Shoot the heck out it and if a part breaks, then get a replacement. (Though I would swap out the extractor, too):)

my first reply was opinion, but I would rely on Stumbler's opinion over mine...done this a little more than me

MIM can be very good parts, the problem is that they have taken a bad rap because of poor quality in their making. Which is why some steer clear of them.
Both Springfield & Kimber have had a bad batch of MIM parts in their guns lately, hopefully they have fixed the problem.
