Picked up MK IV series 80 Government in 45 acp today model # 01970 serial # FG75591.
Box,book and one magazine included i paid 500 and thought it was a good buy just wasnt sure how old it was. Also was struck by how short of a trigger it had when getting it home.By short i mean depth wise from front to back is less than half all other colts i own . Is that normal? Thanks for all the help again.

from what little knowledge i have all series 70's were built in the 1970's. all series 80's were built in the 1980's. hope someone smarter than me comes along with more information. the good thing about looking for someone smarter than me is that you dont have to look very far.

Production 1983 to 1998. You must call Colt for exact year. Serial numbers started with FG01000. They had short triggers.

Thank you. Do you think that it was a good buy at 500$?

Without seeing the pistol it is hard to be sure, but it sounds like a good buy.

Thanks Dakota. I am trying to get pics up this week for all to see. The gun is in great shape. It has a grip screw to replace and one pin head size spot where bluing is worn(maybe a rust spot that was removed, but not sure). Besides that it is perfect in every other way. I am going to try and post pics of all of my Colts this week.

According to 27th edition of gun values govt model MKIV/Series 80, saw that it stated blue finish was disc. in 1997 at 95% condition value $525, 98%-$650, 100%-$775 also says the MSR was $600. looked in serialazation in book did not find, like Paul 45 said you can contact colt for that. My MKIV/Series 80 is stainless and was Disc. 1998 Looking back at your info says ADD 10% for NIB condition. Even at 60% yours is worth $300 I have found these prices a little on low side myself, taking in account Colts custom shop/special orders only way to get new one now. Future hopefully will make value go up. My advice leave stock, short trigger and all. I will say you did good, Enjoy.
