This is not my gun, but if I had a spare $1000 it would be!

1963 Government for $995 listed by a guy on the trapshooters forum.

Yes, that appears to be a very reasonable price if the Colt's in good condition. They seem to be running over $1000.00 in my area for near mint Colt's that are pre-70 series.
I don't like to admit it (I realize I paid a bit too much), but I traded a Walther P-5 plus $350.00 for a 70G Government (mfg 1971) that was dang near perfect except for one small rust pit (pin head size) near the end of the frame that I removed carefully with oil and a small pick. You can still see it if you look close, but the gun was perfect besides that pit, and had the box and papers to boot -- it was probably bought by someone with good intent, shot a few times, and put away never to be oiled again so that one spot took a hit and marred an otherwise mint Series 70 Mark IV.
Oh, well, live and learn. At least I know it won't ever get a chance to rust anymore and in a few years what I paid might just be a bargain in my and other's mind :)

Gee....I don't know. I passed on a 1955 commercial with original box paperwork and sales receipt for 995. It's very nice, but don't see it as the deal of the month.

There's my ignorance showing. I've been watching GunBroker.com for months prior to buying my NRM Commander (locally after all) and it seems like any pre-Series 70 goes for $1200+ with loads in the $1500 range.
I'd really like to have an older Government, so I'll keep an eye out at the local gun shows. Sounds like there are better deals to be had.
Thanks for the info, Paul!

Yeah, I rarely see pre-70's under a grand around here. Colt's are definitely commanding bigger bucks by me. There's a nice '65 I was eyeballin' but it, too, was way up there. Gotta do a lot of digging around to find the right price.

I have known of people (some of them dealers) that will post an item on gunbroker and have a friend of theirs make a bid if it isn't going well. If the price isn't going well enough the friend will make a reasonably high bid and the gun never changes hands.

I had wondered about that possibity...

I was in a dealership one day when a guy I know started talking to the dealer about how they had been doing that.
I started doing business elsewhere right then.
