Hello All,
First off this is an awesome site and I have enjoyed visiting it. I am a long time collector of WWII 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment and 101st Airborne memorabilia. Over the years I have been fortunate to cross paths with a couple of Colt .45s. I am seeking the wisdom of those more knowledgable than I on this subject as I have the opportunity to pick up a 1911A1 from the son of a Vet (not the Veteran directly). Any help would be appreciated. I cannot figure out how to post pictures but I have them of my 1911's.
Thanks in advance.
Sincerly,
John

First, pictures would be the easiest way to help answer your questions. If you can not post any provide as many details about the markings and there locations, the serial number, type of grips, magazine markings if any, etc. If you can field strip the pistol and provide pictures and/or details about markings found on the top of the frame, possibly the bottom of the slide, and on the barrel. We need a little bit more to work with to be able to help. You may also want to view www.coolgunsite.com ID pages and 1911 gallery which has some great pictures and details as well.

It's such a common question that I added a direct link to the section of our FAQ on how to post pictures as part of my signature.

The 1911 frame is a 1919 Remington-UMC, sporting an A.J. Savage Slide. The UNITED STATES PROPERTY marking has been removed from the frame and would have been on the left side forward the slide stop. That is basically a parts pistol, most pistols that are believed to be legitimate arsenal rebuilds with Savage slides, were on Colt frames, stamped with the AA (Augusta Arsenal) rebuild stamp forward the slide stop on the left side of the frame, and finished in either the old arsenal black finish or parkerized. It would be considered a shooters grade pistol and priced as such, especially without the USP.
The 1911A1 is a '43 Remington Rand. Which from the pictures provided look to be OK. It should have an HS (High Standard) marked barrel. In the picture the stamped trigger appears to have checkering/knurling from end to end, without a top or bottom border, indicating that it may be an early style trigger. Better pictures would be needed to say for sure.

Exitwounds,
Thanks for your assistance and expertise. The 1911 was issued in Toccoa GA in 1942 and carried in Normandy, Holland and Bastogne by a 'Trooper in the 101st Airborne and has seen a few miles on it. I will take better pictures of the 1911AI with the details you mentioned. This too was carried by a 'Trooper in the 506th of the 101st.
Thanks again,
Jake
